I picked up this one today as well. Now I need some advice on this one. I come from a background in US coins, where any kind of cleaning is a big no-no. I understand for ancients, some cleaning is OK if done properly. I've noticed some crud(love that technical numismatic jargon) on the legend of this coin. Would this coin be a good candidate for a cleaning? Perhaps a bath in olive oil followed by a light scrubbing with a toothbrush? Philip I; AD 244-249 Silver AR Antoninianus; 21mm/3.1g OBV IMP M IVL PHILIPUS AUG; Radiate Bust Right REV SECURIT ORBIS; Securitas Seated Left Holding Baton
RB, very nice, soak away...just pull out every few days brush, drop back in repeat, till you get what you want....:thumb:
Another nice coin for a budding Ancients Numismatist. Here is the attribution for this one: RIC 48b sear5 #8966 Philip I AR Antoninianus. IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, Radiate bust right, draped & cuirassed / SECVRIT ORBIS, Securitas seated left, holding wand & propping head with left hand. RIC 48b, RSC 215.
