Just picked up this Hadrian today, probably one of the larger ancients I have in my collection. The obverse seems a bit corroded/craggy, but I still liked it enough to plunk down the cash and buy it:devil:. Emperor Hadrian; 117-138 AD Bronze Dupondius: 27mm/14.5 g OBV: HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS; Radiate Head Right REV: COS III; Concordia Seated Left holding patera and resting arm on spes (RIC # 41)
Thanks steveX! I particularly like your avatar this evening.
Agreed - huge eye-appeal. I don't mind a craggy surface at all when you've got details that strong. Well-done!
RB: That is a beautiful coin; however, your ID is incorrect I do believe. I think it is: RIC 657 sear5 #3659 Hadrian AE Dupondius. HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS, radiate head right, drapery at far shoulder / COS III Salus seated left, feeding serpent from extended patera, SC in ex.
Thank you Bing. I always welcome the attribution corrections. I'm finding that's the hardest part of this whole ancient collecting thing. It's not that I don't try, there are just so danged many of the reverses, I can never quite get them to match. I knew that was a serpent coming out of the jug towards the patera, just couldn't locate it in ERIC.
I have ERIC and its a good resource, but, like I've said before, wildwinds is the first place I visit when I'm trying to attribute. If you choose to use ww, don't forget the search function (ctrl + F). It makes life so much easier IMHO. I would also say that the more you see these, the easier it becomes to recognize the various personages just from a glance.
