Yeah, I will probably never have a better score than the one I just had monetary wise, but for the sheer hunt I am really happy with a 1916 S/S and a 1893 S/S barber dime that I picked up both as regulars.
You mean ones with bed times? Not sure who this kid thinks he is fooling, but it is getting old real quick.
my best score was in gold. about 3yrs ago there was a huge premium on proof gold eagles so I sent 4 to MCM and got back 6 unc gold eagles. my average cost of the proofs was about $1050. in the end I got 6 1oz gold eagles for around $710ea from my initial investment when spot was around $1200-20.
I saw a "coin collection for sale" ad on craigslist and it had a 200 price tag. I thought to myself that it probably isnt what i would call a "collection" but i gave them a call. They told me that it had been their fathers and it was in an old bank safe deposit box. This interested me and i told them i would meet with them. I got there and opened it and i started to get a cold chill and shake. I tried to remain calm but i asked, "you said 200 right?" and they said yes is that too much. There before me were thousands of coins, rolls of mercury dimes, i saw ASE, Morgans and more, probably 200 or more individual coins in those brown small envelopes they used to use. I felt so guilty and picked up a roll of the dimes and turned to the guy and said "sir this in my hand is worth more than you are asking" you might want to rethink this. He says to me you collect these right? I said yes sir and he said i would rather this go to someone that collects than to a dealer or someone who is going to resell it. He said ill take 200 if you want it. I handed the guy 200 and then he says hold on you said your daughter collects with you right? I told him yes and he goes to another room and comes back with a stack an inch thick of silver certificates and says here take these too. This is a once in a lifetime find i realize but once i got everything home i looked through every single coin and my 200 turned into close to 10k pretty quickly. Granted its worthless as my wife says because i have never traded or sold a coin in my life but at least i know what its worth , add to my horde as she says.
I've made a few big scores, although nothing like hartnessjr's deal or BQ's dimes. But most of them have been blind luck -- the time I found somebody trying to dump a jar full of silver into a CoinStar, the time I found a 1oz AGE listed with a BIN 40% below melt and it turned out to be real, an auction lot whose photos omitted one row of 2x2's that included a VF Barber half. It's hard to feel proud of any of them (well, I did buy the CoinStar guy a couple of grocery gift cards worth a lot more than he was expecting).
