Some of you have seen this Morgan posted a little while ago by another member (kevin, aka cpb614). If you have seen it, then you may know it is in an ICG holder graded at MS 62. I am not a Morgan collector, but seeing this beauty in hand, and comparing to some other graded Morgans, I gotta think it is under graded by at least a point. I also believe the toning is original bag toning. You can see some texture on the obverse that makes me think that. Please correct me if I am wrong. It has some die polish lines on the reverse in the lower right field. In is not PL at all, but the contrast is great between the fields and the devices with strong luster and vivid color. What do you think about the grade and what it may be worth with the toning? Thanks!
I think it is a borderline 63 in a PCGS or NGC holder--nice contrasts, sharp devices, and attractive toning. It looks decently struck for the date, and I'd say the toning offers a $30-50 premium over the $50-65 dollar real world price. Only downside is obverse is a bit baggy (a la MS 63), and the holder.
I like the toning on the obverse. Reverse looks real nice. I agree with 63. Value, I would feel comfortable paying $80-$100 because of the toning.
I say if it grades, it would be a strong 62. Maybe a 62+ Value, I'll leave it to the people who spend ridiculous numbers to tell ya as I don't buy Morgans.
Thanks for your opinions, folks. I just bought it from Kevin via Greg (Gbroke). So it is now one of Morgandude's toners, and I welcome it as an addition to my collection. I shall probably submit it to NGC, since all of my toners are either PCGS or NGC.
Beautiful coin I'm a toned morgan guy my self. Its deff natural toning I have a guy who artificially tones coins and that's all natural nice buy!
NOPE, I never spend ridiculous numbers to buy coins. I get nice toned coins at slightly over book, or even under book--just takes a bit of looking and self-control. My average premium spent for a toned Morgan is about $31 per coin for something I consider beautiful. So, no, I am not a moon money spender for toning, but appreciate it nonetheless.
That's like Jenny on Storage Wars Texas painting every antique piece of wood furniture she digs up. Ruins it. Contaminated and ungradeable for ever, for anyone who ever could have enjoyed it in the future. Dooming it to be a perpetual disappointment to each new owner as it is sent, and resent, for grading only for each new owner to see it is rejected. Then they start looking for the next new owner. Sad that some folks don't care if they have a permanent impact on the hobby in general, toning in particular, as long as they make a buck. These people jeopordize the future of the hobby, and with every coin they doctor they bring suspicion to those with NT .
