I beleive its a blank. I found it awhile back and not sure when or where. It weighs 2.5 grams, its .740 in diameter with a rounded rim on it that is .074ish thick. Im not sure of how blanks are made, but this is copper (plated) throughout. I forgot to take a pic. Ill add it later. Does this sound like a blank ? If so, are they commonly found in circulation ?
pics!!!.....we need them. Blanks are not common to find in circulation, but they are pretty common in general. Most coin shops sell them for a couple bucks.
If the rim is turned up slightly, then it is considered a planchet because it has gone through the upsetting mill. If not, then it would be considered a blank. It's pretty hard to confirm that a blank was actually destined to become a coin. Chris
That's right. It sounds like you found a planchet (not a blank). It is a cool find but not worth a whole lot.
So would this be the correct process for making pennies ? 1. A blank is made 2. Its copper plated 3. Its formed into a planchet 4. Its struck into a penny Im sure there are more processes but is that the basic set up ?
Yes. I cleaned it. That was the first thing I found after 2 weeks I started collecting. Again, I was clueless. If it would make you feel better, I can post a pic of another one I found a few weeks later. Its a mess Now, back to the "planchet". I don't like that word. It sounds cheap. I prefer to call it a 101% offset memorial cent. It has a nice ring to it which instantly so expensive and very rare. So any offer for my 101% offset memorial cent over $10,000 ... will be considered
How do you know it was a memorial cent? Could be from 2009 (Lincoln commemorative) or could have been for a union shield cent (2010-now)...
And you should call it "off center" instead of "offset". "Off center" is a numismatic term used to describe a coin that was struck with the planchet not centered between the dies.
Even though it's not an off-center cent to begin with. I just don't want any new collectors to be reading this thread and think they have an error coin when it is simply an unstruck planchet....
Hmm. Shielded Cent. Let me give it a think... :thumb: PLEASE! DON'T TAKE THIS THREAD SERIOUSLY. IM BEING POTATO. No such coin exists that's a 101% off-center (thanks for the correction) shielded (nice trump) cent.
