I bought 2 of the 1999 silver proof sets back in 99. I see now that they are selling for around $350 on ebay. I was thinking about selling them but wasnt sure if now is the right time to sell. I was wondering if you guys think that the prices of these are going to go up higher or if you think they are going to drop once the state quarter hype dies down in a couple years once the program ends.
My guess is, and it's just a guess, that once the series is complete many "collectors" are going to feel that they have accomplished what they have spent so long trying to do. They will then want to turn that accomplishment into cash, all at the same time. Prices will quickly fall as sets all hit the market at once. As the prices fall people will panic and try to get rid of theirs while they're still worth something. Then will be the time to buy. As for selling, there is no time like the present.
The mintage of the 1999 silver proof sets aren't really that much lower than the 2000-2004 silver proof sets, but as you noticed they command a large premium. The reason for this, I believe, is that many of these proof sets were bought by people whose interest was sparked by the state quarters program, but lost interest soon thereafter and the sets are now sitting in a drawer somewhere. The fact that the mint never lifted the limit of 2 sets per person probably also has something to do with it, as the usual players that stockpile these things by the hundreds and thousands weren't able to do so for this set. Anyway, my guess is that as these people rediscover their sets, and find out what they are sitting on, they are going to want to sell. As more and more of these silver proof sets come out of the woodwork, the price may come down. On the other hand, I'm also guessing that in 2009 when the state quarters program comes to a close, a lot of people are going to decide that's the time to put together their complete state quarter set, and demand for the 1999 (as well as the other sets) may suddenly grow. Of course, this is all speculation on my part. If you sell them today, and this time next year they are going for $1500...
I can only speak for myself, but I have all the silver sets except the 99 and have been waiting for it to go down. So far, it has only gone up. I know there is a lot of speculation that the state quarter program has created this price and that it will go down after the series ends. Since I have been waiting for it to go down and it hasn't, it just may continue to trend up forever as I sit and wait for it to drop. I have read that to be a successful stock seller, you must set a limit and sell when it get there. Then don't look back. Sounds like good advice for coins too. Dragon
