Well since nobody else is exercising any moderation around here, I went and grabbed this one today, for my Constantine era type set. It fits nicely into my aesthetic of inexpensive VF coins with attractive patinas. I could do better with Constantine I and his sons, grade-wise, but I'm holding them to VF because once I start adding the cousins and mothers and wives, some of those coins get rather pricey in high grades. I'd like the set to be more-or-less equal in quality. This coin gives me the three sons of Constantine I by Fausta. The others are Constans and Constantius II...
I take it that is the seller's image? If so, I wonder if it will be that color in hand. I hope so. It's a nice looking coin Here is my version of this coin from Siscia:
Very nice Bing! Yeah, it's the seller's image, and I turned down the brightness because very likely it's juiced. That's ok though - I've learned what to expect from images now, when it comes to ancients. I'm putting together the right equipment to take professional pics, so eventually I'll replace all the images in my albums with my own - and I'm positively anal about making my images look like the coins in hand.
If you look through my albums, you will find many different backgrounds in my images. Some of the poorest quality images are mine from when I first began keeping pictures of my coins. Some of the images are the sellers images I kept as they were better than what I might take and they are representative of the coin in hand. I think I told you this once before. On hard to image coins, I have a tendency to make the image easier to see rather than make them look like the coin in hand. I suppose it comes down to the purpose of the image in the first place, right?
Yes, and I don't disagree with the aesthetic of enhancing an image to represent various features of the coin - I think sometimes you just have to. At the moment I'm pacing around, waiting for the mailman to arrive with the coin I posted in this thread... http://www.cointalk.com/t223538/ USPS tracking says it's out for delivery. I'm very curious as to the color. I don't think the image has been juiced - it seems like an ordinary cell-phone pic. But I'm going to take my own pics and add them to that thread, as soon as it arrives.
Crispus. Plenty of high-grade bronzes of his floating around. The ones I'm worried about are, for instance, Hannibalianus, to name one.
No problem. Crispus was the son of Constantine and a rather mysterious woman by the name of Minervina. It's not certain whether she was his wife or concubine.
Moderation is a bit like dieting => all it does is make you cranky and hungry ... and then if you ever fall off the diet-wagon, you end-up eating twice as much!! (nobody wants to develop an eating disorder, right? => so I say, if you're able to buy some nice yummy treats, then eat to your heart's content!!) ... oh, the same logic applies to collecting coins ... :eating:
