I must have been sleeping on the 17th of February. Actually, I think I had the flu so maybe I'm not such a stupid. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-S-DDO-...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 Anybody care to guess the importance of this fantastic auction that I missed out on?
Nobody is even close. Think...................Type B Washington Think...................1964-D Type C Reverse Think...................Type 2 Eisenhower Business Strike Think...................1971-S Silver Proof Eisenhower And STOP thinking about Nixon! Better yet.............Think Coin World 12/3/2007.
I'm not an Eisenhower collector, but I bought some books a while back (that I've never read). After consulting "The Authoritative Reference on Eisenhower Dollars" Wexler, Crawford, and Flynn, I "think" this proof could have the Type 2 (proof) obverse coupled with the Type 1 (business strike) reverse. ...am I close?
Almost. You see, the 1971-S Proof Coins were intended to be coupled with the Type 2 Reverse which was the high relief counterpart (proof) to the Type 1 Reverse (business strike). In mid 1972, one of the Type 2 High Relief Reverse dies was used in the Business Strike Presses in Philadelphia. The 1972 Type 2 CnClad Ike was the result. The coin in the listing has a Type 1 Reverse. It's one of 4 currently known and could very well be a low 5 figure coin. I believe I was down with the flu when this listing ended..............Dang!
That depends upon whether you intended to say "could have the Type 2 Reverse" or meant to say "should have the Type 2 Reverse". BTW, all the 1971-S Proof Coins had either the inaccurately labeled (in the ARED) Type 2 (Serifed) obverse or the Type 3 (Pegleg) Obverse. On James Wiled Variety Vista page ( http://www.varietyvista.com/Eisenhower%20Dollar%20ODV%20Changes.htm ), there is a more accurate description of the ODV Types since there were actually 2 "different" Serifed R's. One which was by design (ODV-007 used from 1973 - 1978) and one where the serif was added to the ODV-006 Master Hub by hand (ODV-004) in 1971. 1972 saw a Pegleg by design R (currently only attributed to ODV-008 for the first versions of the BiCentennials) So, dod you mean "should"?
To phrase my answer as a "declarative" rather than a "conditional", I would say... The coin in the auction "has" the Type 2 (proof) obverse coupled with the Type 1 (business strike) reverse. ...I was trying state my observation more as a question than an statement as not to sound like an Ike authority...which I'm clearly not.
I think the missing 18-1/2 minutes of the Watergate tapes would probably have brought much, much more at auction. Chris
