They're quite beautiful! Are you a designer for a mint?

IT would be nice if something like that were issued for a 2E coin, but with the conclave moved up, it may not happen.

Hmm, why not? Benedict XVI will resign on Friday (20h CET), and in his Motu Proprio he merely stated that the conclave could begin earlier, ie. no 15 day waiting period. However, there will certainly be a Sede Vacante period before the next Pope is elected. Short, but long enough for a coin or two. ;)

Seems that Frizio's designs are pretty close to what we can expect from the Vatican. :) There will be a special Sede Vacante €2 coin (mintage 125,000) featuring the "emblem of the Cardinal camerlengo with the pavilion of the Apostolic Camera."

Also, two collector coins: €5 silver (mintage 10,000) and €10 gold (mintage 5,000). Same design as the €2 coin, but instead of the common map side they will show a dove (symbolizing the Holy Spirit) and the "Veni Sancte Spiritus" motto. The gold coin will be tiny by the way: 3 g and 13.85 mm ...

PS: The "regular" coins will come in April and show Benedict XVI. The Sede Vacante pieces are likely to be issued in May.

If they were France the Vatican would have then issued a "Pontifica Emeritus" coin.

A French collector coin would at least be legal tender in France. The two silver/gold Sede Vacante collector coins are legal tender in the Vatican City State only ...

Aside from the post office is there really that much to buy there? Maybe gift shoppes in the museums? I don't think they have an Auchan or Tesco or Amstor or anything.

There is a pharmacy "in the country" as well, for example. :) http://www.vaticanstate.va/IT/Servizi/FarmaciaVaticana/ Well, those surcharged euro collector coins are, to some extent, like American commemorative dollars - if you buy a piece with a $1 face value at a price of $50, you won't try and spend it anyway.

Now the regular euro coins (circulation pieces and commemorative €2 coins) from the Vatican can be used in the entire euro area, and the country is obliged to issue at least half of the volume for circulation, at the nominal value. But that refers to the total annual volume, not to single issues/denominations. In any case, the mintage of 125,000 will hopefully prevent extremely high prices ...

Right, but doing that now would be a violation of the current monetary agreement. So there will "only" be a special €2 coin on this occasion.

I managed to get that real cheap (two hundred bucks or so).
