Attached are 2 V Nickels struck on foreign planchets. The problem is that I am not sure which country. Can anyone help. The coins are both 3 grams and 3.03 grams. The planchet is much thinner than normal and a slightly smaller diameter. They both have the same color. With all these similarities, they must be planchets from the same country, but which?
It may not be from another country, Some one had a couple of thse awhile back that didn't match any known coin that the mint had done for another country. It turned out that around that time the mint was being supplied with nickel planchets by an outside firm that was also producing planchets for token manufacturers and it was believed that these night be token planchets that got mixed in with the nickel planchets.
I've a few hardtimes tokens on Liberty planchets. There were times when planchet manufactures werent held to a higher standared. They sold to whoever had the $$. I've seen a good many used in slot machines over the years.
That sounds interesting. It seems improbable that the same tokens would be present for two different minting years, although possible. I would also think that the mint records back then could be incomplete and maybe the mint struck coins for countries using those planchets. Just a thought.
