I found this half dollar 1990P that is opposite of what it should be. Wondering how rare this might be. Any insight would be appreciated.
Looks normal to me (coin alignment) if it was a 180 degree rotation the reverse would be facing upward to match the obverse but yours doesn't,not rare, still 50 cents
My coun is set up like a medal. If I turn the coin like a page in a book it reads the right way up. Unlike my others. I will try to take a picture in the mirror.
Everyone.. I rim looks questionable. There can also be a possibility that it's a machined coin. Could be someones magic coin they accidentally spent. There is a magic trick called the Scotch and Soda coin trick. Google it. The Obverse is a machined shell and the Reverse is cut in a way that it fits into the shell. One side is the Kennedy reverse and the other a foreign coin glued together.
I agree with above - looks like the rev. side has been machined, and a cut-down reverse has been inserted into the reverse, upside down. Do the 'drop test' - drop the coin on any hard surface (metal, wood, glass, etc.) and compare the 'ring' of it to that of a normal half dollar. I think there's a good chance the OP's coin will have a different 'ring' to it, when tested like this. Weight would be a bit helpful, but the 'drop test' is the best, imo
@GARY R COYIER One method of separating the obverse shell from the other machined reverse is to put it into a mason jar and gently shake it around so they will separate. It might take some time but it wouldn't hurt to try.
We did the drop test quite a few times. Made a video of it. Is there a way to post it? It does sound off, maybe a little more heavy sounding. I weighed it and the coin in question weighed 11.31oz . Funny thing (maybe just my scale) all the other halves we weighed were all around 11.20oz. You would think the one in question would be farther off weight than the closest. Help appreciated, if other ideas.
The only way to post a video is if you upload it to YouTube then share it to CoinTalk like the video I shared earlier. Sound test can't fully determine anything nor the weight difference since all coins have a +/- tolerance of a few grams. Try the mason jar like I suggested.
That rim is cut. Going all the way around like that…. Looks like MAD but all the way around. Any mint made error like that? I think not
