Here is another sestertius I got last night. I like Trajan, but the second pic shows the reason I reall like this coin. The relief on this coin is just spectacular. Its literally higher than the thick edge of a sestertius. It was just too cool to pass up, it reminds me of a 19th century medal.
Wow! Beautiful coin Chris. Looks like it's got some serious heft to it. What is the weight on that thing?
Here is the reverse, along with the reverse of the Caracalla sestertius. Sorry for my horrid picture taking skills. It actually looks nice in person.
Both of those coins are positively glorious. Your phone takes good pics! I've got a medium-sized sestertius on the way myself. It's only one millimeter smaller than my precious Kennedys, but six grams heavier. As much as I love my flimsy little LRBs, I'm looking forward to playing with a good sized chunk of orichalcum.
Seems like a nice sestertius with high relief, nice choice medoraman. That was one of the reasons why I bought this denarius of L. Verus. The head is struck in such high relief that it appears to be a little sculpture all by itself. Those romans sure knew how to strike a coin - nothing like many of those modern flat (and insipid) designs!
The low relief on a lot of recent moderns doesn't bother me as much as the computer-perfect look of so many of the designs. It sucks the human element out of the sculpture.
My Orbiana sticks out even further then that. Same with a faustina jr of mine. Thats one of the things that amazed me when I got my first ancient. Just the relief and detail. I look at current u.s. coins then ancients and I just wanna pi** all over our coins. So lifeless.
For those who missed it on the other thread, here is the obverse on the caracalla sestertius i bought also. This was the one i was really waiting for. Hard to describe the patina, emerald green but changing in the light like a jewel. I keep pulling it out to stare at it in the light. But, I still don't collect Romans.
