I found a few wheat cents from the 50's that have turned red.

They have not been painted, but it looks as if they turned that way over time.

What would cause such a thing?

Too much time in the sun without proper protection? Lincoln cents need at least SPF 15 or higher.

Accumulative layers of cuprite will turn a copper coin red. It's one step away from turning black and corroding away.
