What are they exactly? Are they made of nickel and from your comment I guess they are common?

 

I have no idea what he is talking about. There were no nickel coins struck anywhere at that time.

 

I think they had no idea what they were, so they called them nickels. They may have been nickel sized.

 

Is it just me? I wanted them to post a picture of the shoe. The coins they shown are badly damaged.

 

That's the shoe in the first pic. Time didn't treat it very well either.

 

Umm, those "nickels" are actually stuivers. (The Dutch coins they found were stuivers, half stuivers and double stuivers.) In Dutch, stuiver is a common term for the 5 cent coin - and the US English equivalent would be the nickel. Had the English article said "stuiver", some would probably have asked, huh, what the heck is that ...

I find it much more likely that the blogger improperly translated "stuiver" as "nickel." He could easily have said "stuiver, a Dutch silver coin..."

 

Yeah, but the writer is following King James precedent. Denarius=penny, lepta=mite, etc.

 

Yeah...yeah, that's the ticket.

 

What did he keep in his other shoe, thats the question :biggrin:
