2008 Hawaii Quarter Die Gouge I found this quarter with a long die gauge on the big island of Hawaii,i think it's near Kona?
That is damage. A gouge is recessed in the die, meaning it would be in relief on the coin. Smething simply scratched your coin, so it would be PMD. Keep up the hunt!
Here' a close up shot of the big island, notice the gauge is molded right in to the raised element which is the south side of the big island.
A raised area on the die that is a result of damage caused by a gouging action from engravers tools, ejection mechanisms, awls, or anything that results in a gouge in a die.The 2005 D Nickel "Speared Bison " would be a an example.
It is actually a recessed area on the die caused by scraping of a tool or something else. It is raised on the coin, not the die.
Kona is on the east side of the island. Go straight to the left of the gouge and that is where Kona is. You're closer to Kilaeua on that gouge.
I just like geography. And the Big Island. I may not know a lot about coins yet but I can at least pass on my geography knowledge.
