At one time it was debated that this coin was the "Shekel" made famous in the bible. These were in circulation through out the Levant well into Jesus' life time. In most recent years expert and scholars think the Shekel and the half denomination (the didrachm) of the Melkart series is a more likely candidate as they were also minted in Judea. Phoenicia, Sidon AR Tetradrachm (Shekel) 28.5 mm x 13.13 g c.101-100 BC dated AI = yr 11 Obverse: Turreted, veiled, draped bust of Tyche Reverse: Eagle standing left on ships prow with palm under wing-(worn) SIDWNOS. THS.IAPAS.KAI.ASYLOY AI and monogram Z? I have noticed a few other guys here love Tyche as I do. This coin is not in the best of shape it is heavily worn yet I still love it. I think its Lucky.
Hey A-Dawg ... Yah sadly, I don't have "Tyche" ... but happily, I do have "Toque" => here is the other half of one of my previous posts
For the record => only 3 more days and then I should have some new coins of my own to post!! (yippeeee!!!) Man, this has been an uncharacteristically long and painful dry-spell for good ol' stevex6, eh? (usually I am pretty "regular") ... => this time, it's gonna be one big explosion of coins!! (Frraaaaappppp!!!) I can hardly wait!! Ooops sorry Dawg => I didn't mean to break-up your super-cool coin thread!! (honestly, I keep on meaning to buy a Tyche, but then something else always catches my eye!!) ... I didn't buy one in this up-coming seven coin splurge, but I will definitely but a "Tyche" back on my list of for-sure-purchases!! (absolutely great coin) :u*meY:
A shekel is gonna be on pawn stars tomorrow if anyone is interested. Should be interesting from the previews. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10100172863312573

I don't own any shekels, but I do have a Hadrian struck at Phoenicia, Sidon. I also have a liking of Tyche and seem to be amassing a collection. Yours is a nice coin. I need to hunt one down.
Btw Tyche is a very interesting goddess. You could have like twelve cultures with coine of her. I love Tyche/river god coins. I just need to stop chasing centr asia lng enough to buy more.
Just a couple really. I have other tyche on things like elymais, partian tets, and antioch byzantine. Tyche/river god nice large provincials i have only a couple of. For my collection overall, i was unpleasantly surprised this weekend. I was putting together my hunnic coins for my presentation, and found out i only have 50. I seriosly needto spend some more time on these, as i find them fascinating.
