Hello, so at work I found this nickel during one of my daily coins sweeps, and i noticed it right off. This nickel has obvious cracks, 2 major ones and 2 or more that arent defined enough for my camera to see well enough. I am sure they are cracks and not gouges or cuts. Under Mag they look like the grand canyon, layered. The larger of the 2 major ones goes from edge to edge, under the "n" in In god we trust, across the head and out by the "L" in liberty. The obverse is the only area that shows these cracks. These may be some form of strike thru but they look identical to cracks in stone, only shallow. These is also a minor Cud above jefferson and both sides exhibit wood grain which also goes along the same direction as the cracks . Opinions please, any rarity or premium? thanks BTW these are the best pics I could get, hope they do.
seems interesting. maby the reason why people have not commented is probaly because they'r doing research. im looking up priceing rite now....
There are no cracks or cuds on the reverse, barely even any scratches or circ damage, though the wood grain is present.
it would be best to see the reverse though. it could double the price, or cut it in half, or do nothing. rite now your at $200. but thats my opinion. you may get lucky selling it for $150.
I did my best to get good resolution pics, though im not sure whats on the reverse was important, so I hope these do well. I uploaded to my photobucket since CoinTalk only allows me to upload 3 pics per post. http://s164.beta.photobucket.com/us...ckel cracks-woody-cud?#socialShare_more_label
I'm not sure where you are getting your numbers, but they definitely don't seem accurate. I'm only well-versed in cents, but this looks like a typical improper alloy mix. Not a high-dollar error. Something like 5 bucks. By the way, cuds are die breaks that are connected to the rim. I don't see any on your coin.
The cud is above jeffersons head, small, nothing huge, im also inclined to think its improper metal mix, mainly due to the wood grain which could have possibly promoted metal weakness resulting in the cracks. I wont make my own judgement.
