I will give in to the majority, but, if you find this coin in this condition for around $60, please let me know.

Both coins looks nice, I wouldn't mind owning either one. And at the prices quoted I think its a fair price.

I'm not much into Repulican coins but looking around a little, I must agree with Bing that 60$ (even 100$ or 150$) is very cheap for such a coin, in that condition.

A few examples from vcoins (not much better looking, but much more than 60$)...

All of those are overpriced, some of the dealers listed are even notorious for over pricing coins.

Here is one that sold quite recently for $100. http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=226946

$60 is a fair offer, considering the dealer did absolutely no extra work on it.

I think that the CNG coin is not as good looking as the one from the OP personally (broader flan, sharper details, better style). And a final price of 100$ at CNG means you have to pay 125-130$ +...

Once more. If anyone finds this coin in similar condition for $60, please let me know if you yourself don't want to buy. Many of you know I have branched out recently into RR coins. Most are not cheap especially in this condition. So, just let me know......

I said what I would pay. So, if i found it, i would pay it and own it.

Personally i like the op coin obverse, but CNG's reverse better. Plus, buying from a major firm you get some guarantees that you don't from a random purrchase. That is also worth something.

I will say mine again, show me that coin much more than $60 and i pass it by. $65 maybe, $70 if nothing else to buy, and no chance higher.

    Just my opinion.

It is possible that Chris and I are spoiled by older, better prices and special opportunities. Nevertheless, I would offer $60, maybe up to $100, depending how close a friend the dealer is.

That's the wonderful thing about ancients. Good coins can be had at all variety of prices.

Everything is possible with ancients, you can even get a better one of these for free with a good metal detector, a well located spot and a little luck :D

Since these do not come with a price tag, all we have to rely on is how much one would be ready to spend for it, considering various individual factors. There's no hard way to fix prices.

For example, I've paid 225$ for the following before consigning it to CNG (and still regret selling it :()...

What is the value of this coin ?

Let's say that the probability of buying one in a relatively short term is better if you are willing to pay 2000$ than if your budget is limited at 200$...

I think maybe we are just shellshocked by recent price increases as well. Otoh, i showed in another thread nice vf denari i bought for $18 per last year, can show you byzantine gold i bought recently for about $200, and some similar deals. Heck just a few months ago i bought over 500 lrb. Deals are still out there if you shop enough, especially if you look at group lots.

If i gave you all my secrets i would have to shoot you, lol. I will say not one of them ever came from vcoins. Vauctions yes, vcoins no.

Edit: sorry, it is silly to argue about. If someone were a rr collector, they will pay a stronger price. For greek and roman, i am a price buyer. Make this coin a rare ugly sogdian piece i am sure i would pay more than anyone else here. :)

    Peace.

You wouldn't have to shoot me. Just cut off my head and put it in the safe! We all have our secrets. As far as Vcoins go, I've bought a few, but I've always haggled over the price. I agree, shopping around and patience are the keys. I must bow  to your shopping skills. I own no gold, but I would if I found some Byzantine gold at $200.

You will be happy to know (as I am :jumping-jack:) that there's a new auction site opening very soon administered by Barry Murphy (ex vauctions administrator) and John Lavender :flirty0wink:

Barry is a good guy, and John. Hopefully it will be a success for them.

Bing, best i can say is check out everywhere, especially off the beaten track. Frank Robinson used to be great, but too many people know now. Still, he has a great deal on elamite coins now. ;)
