Found this gem.... 1940 Proof in a box of Nickels! Not in awesome shape, but no doubt in my mind it is a proof. Bears no MM, & has beautiful mirror-like luster. No major scratches...Anyone care to offer opinions on grade & value? Thanks!
just curious what makes you think it is a proof. coins minted in philadelphia did not have a mint mark in 1940. even if it was a proof because of the condition there would be no real premium
I read online that Proofs were made in Philadelphia 1938-1940...I also read that a 1940 proof set was worth around $1,400,,, Soooooooo,,,, I wonder if there be anyone else who can chime in here?
This is true, but business strike coins were also minted in Philadelphia. Yours appears to be a polished business strike.
Sorry Tired of Cards. That would have been a nice find. Something to keep in mind regarding the early proofs. They will be pretty obvious when you see one. They won't all have a cameo, but the the edges will be much more square, and the detail on the strike will be noticeable. The reverse is especially noticeable as the windows, stairs, and overall details will be very strong. Here is my example:
maybe a full proof set in a very high grade might be worth that much. i have a 1940 proof nickel graded at a 66 and it's only worth like $100-125 if that
