I found this buffalo nickel last weekend at my Grandfathers house in one of his books. Is this for real & what kind of a grade do you think it is ? Im not too good at grading buffalo nickels so any help would be appreciated.
WOW!! Congratulations, you've got a VERY EXPENSIVE coin there. I'd say maybe AU-50 (a guess) on the grade because I see a full horn....That coin, according to PCGS, might be around 40,000 dollars 0_0!!!! Oh, and yes, It is definently the doubled one.
ohhh dont get his hopes up. I see a minor double, but im not sure if its really it. Wait for some more replies. -Rob
That picture of the date looks like it could be copied straight out of the Cherry Pickers Guide! I don't think there is any doubt it is an FS16. The only thng to discuss is the grade. Congratulations.
Numisfun,I know of 2 dealers over here in New Zealand who each came across an example of this extremely rare coin. One of the dealers was actually my boss's twin brother, who I know very well. I wonder what both Krause's & Red Book's prices are on this coin - in US$,of course! Aidan.
Hi, Holy mackerel! I'm almost 100% sure that is the major variety. As for the grade, I think the coin would grade an au-53. As far as the value, I suspect it would bring over 40 k at auction.
Can anybody see any doubling on the chin, throat and the tie on the braids? The date looks like the real thing and I can see the doubling on the feathers but not the chin, throat and tie. Lou
I would grade it AU53-55--a really nice coin!...now I know that most of the time PCGS's price guide is way over hyped and in this case the $40K might be alittle high but there is no doubt that this is a killer coin! Speedy
Looks like the real deal to me, and it might just go AU. My only concern would be that it appears it may have been cleaned.
This is a very nice coin, but I have too disagree on the grading. In order too have it grade at AU50 or higher Half the mint luster has to be present and just a traces of light wear on the high point, but what I see this coin has more then just a trace of wear on the hair ribbon and horn and it looks a little wash out. But overall still a very nice coin EF 40 at best, but even at that 07 Red Book list it at $13,000.00 and Dec. COINValues list at $18,000.00 a very nice find. But what do I know, it may just be the picture and it may go AU 50 $30,000.00 in 07 Red Book and $35, 000.00 in Dec. COINValues. Best of luck with it. GET IT GRADED!
I just got back from a coin dealer he was very excited & agreed that it is real. He is going to send it to NGC for me. We overnighted it for shipping FedEx & I paid him $60 for a 2 day turnaround at NGC. I will let you all know what it ends up being.
Hey---that is great! Let us know when it comes back!!! Do you mind telling us how you got the coin?...did you buy it knowing it was the DD or how??!!!! Speedy
Speedy, I think he said that he got it from one of his Grandfather's books. Numisfun, Please let us know what it grades out too. We will all be hoping for the best AU 50 or better.
Nice coin Numisfan. I wouldn't put anything less than an AU-53 on that coin. If your grandpa had that coin, you may want to carefully search his other coins and report back here with some pics.
This is one that needs to be authenticated. The pictures look like it is the "big one". CONGRATULATIONS!!
Doug, even if the coin has been cleaned, then it is still a nice space-filler.You'd be a mug to sell it if you ever found one of these. Aidan.
