Guys, as you know I am a major barber dime collector. I love them, I have built and sold five or six complete sets with the goal of making my number one set a sight to behold. So last Friday I visited a shop and got a couple of nice ones and thought I would check on ebay and see what kind of wonderful stuff existed out there for me. On Saturday I did some browsing and found a seller who was liquidating a collection from the 40's (yeah right) but they were listing multiple coins per lot. So I watched a few and was browsing through their other lots when I saw something I wasn't sure about. It was a set of 1942 P,D,S Dimes. Mercury is not my first love, but I have a set and last year I did find three 1942/1 mercs. Yeah, the odds were low, but the picture just seemed to say to me this is a 1942/1 D coin in MS. Here they are from the auction My first thought was someone else would see what I did and there would be a bidding war on, and I wasn't even a hundred percent sure on the coin. I don't normally take chances. But, come auction close I didn't get outbid. They arrived tonight and here are the pics. It is the real thing. It is already on its way to NGC and then a safety deposit box. I didn't actually believe the seller when they said they were liquidating a collection from the 40's but with a fresh coin like this on the market, suddenly I find it a much more credible tale. I am quite in shock.
All I see is the bottom of the 1 under the 2. Is that it or is there other evidence I'm missing? Also, assuming this is real, isn't this a multi thousand dollar coin?
Sheesh! A friend told me they won $16,000 at the casino today and then this... when is my big day? Nice score!
On the 42/1 D the 1 does not close off the front of the 2 as it does on the P issue. For other evidence look at the doubling of the base of the upright of the 4.
I’ll tell you, you sure appear to be defying the ods! How many Mercs did you examine to find 4 over dates?
I've been examining 42's since the early 90's when I discovered the overdate in my redbook. It has always been a dream, so I would say at least a hundred thousand, I still hit the bargain boxes at any coin show I go to and I will continue to hit the bargain boxes.
Seeing this with un-tainted virgin eyes, is it the "extension" of the lower part of the 4 (and a little to the left) which defines it? If so it does seem easy to see, esp. in the third photo (the one o.p. took) P.S. I also see this "extension" on the left side of the 2 at the bottom of it....
