Just went and looked at some of my coins and I came across this. Very ugly gold toning and red something on the Hot Springs. Anyone else have this problem?

Ewwwwwwwwww yucky! I'd remove from that case immediately. Color looks like bleed off from the mint packaging.

Or the beginning of premium toning. The red on HS is definitely a problem.

Don't have mine to compare, is that a silver set?

Normally I'd agree it's toning, but those marks are scattered and same color as the package. I don't have the 2010 proof set silver or otherwise, so I can't say for sure which set it is the OP has.

I think we do partially agree. The red on the reverse of the HS appears to be a problem from the pics. I’ve never seen that, other than fibers from the package - not 100% positive, but it doesn’t appear to be removable fibers.

I like the toning starting on the obverses, which may turn into full blown rainbow target toning.

I'm not sure I see any of it as a problem. But if it was mine, I'd put it right back where it was and leave it there ;)

Yea it's the silver proof set.

will put it back in the place it was. Thought coins needed lighted areas to get toned. This baby hasn't seen light since I put it away.

What do you think the red is on the HS?

i believe its toning. all of it. the obverse looks late first cycle, the red splotches may be late second cycle. those will be pretty.

  12. Great advice. These could bring a huge toning premium down the road. I would remove every 6 months or yearly to photograph as well, and of course post these pics here on CT. :) TC

i have a set of silver state quarters in a dansco album. every one has toning going on like those you have posted. they are mostly starting to tone on the raised surfaces.

after looking at the can see that my silver state quarters are well into the first cycle. they are now between medium gold and russet makes me want to keep the set to see where the colors go from their. i was originally worried there was a problem with them

My 2012 proof set got sent back because I found brown spots on a couple of the coins. I wasn't able to get another set because they sold out in the time that it took for the US Mint to process my order.

Just checked all my silver state quarter proof sets and none of them have any toning at all.... Hmmm.... I guess since I'm not a big fan of toning I should be happy.
