Coins in an old movie - The Good Earth (1937) Thanks to DVD technology, it is now possible to "freeze" frames on an old movie. These three pictures are from the 1937 MGM film "The Good Earth" which is about Chinese peasant farmers in the years around the 1911 revolution. About 35 minutes into the film, the lead character's hands are shown handling silver dollars. The 1911 revolution occurs later on in the film. Appears to be a China Sun Yat Sen "junk" dollar 1934 (year 23) obverse. An obvious anachronism as the film is set before 1911. Appears to be a China Empire "dragon" dollar 1911 obverse Appears to be a China Chihli Province Pei Yang Arsenal dollar (1899-1908) reverse Appears to be a China Szechuan Province dollar (1901-1909) obverse Willie
If I remember correctly, it has been so long ago since I read that book, The characters in China hid thier coins for safe keeping by making an earthen wall, or extension in the house and holing them up in them which reminded of another thread on "How do you store your coins" Interesting that you took the time to freeze frame the movie, you seem to have an eye for detail which I guess is everything in collecting coins.
