Welcome to: The One Cent Toned Thread! (dang that took a while!) So in this thread I would incorage you to discuss one cent pieces that are toned,(not pennys, that british) and post some pictures, get other discussions about them and most importantly argue! So enjoy this thread! Keep it running! Heres a 1841 old toned cent piece: (graded by PCGS PR65) (not mine)
Here is a 1959 1 cent struck on a defective planchet mint error MS 64 RB from ThePennyLady's old thread (all credit goes to her) its amazing though.
Not sure I want to argue, but I'll post a coin. I paid a premium to acquire this coin since the colors and luster are so intense. These pics give some idea, but it's a great coin to see in person. Typically, such color intensity on Indian cents is reserved for proof versions and, since this is MS, that is another reason why I wanted to add it to my collection.
I'll play! Nothing over the top here in the color department, just nice hints of purple/ blue washing a handsome brown base luster and hammered strike! I love this look.
Here are my favorite two out of my collection.....sory no reverse pic on the 71, but it looks the same as the obverse
here is one i have from a double mint set. it's sad i have to sell it. here is a picture of the obverse and reverse. then another one of 2 different lighting angles of the obverse
Although I collect toned coins, I generally stay away from toned copper. My personal opinion is that it is too easy to artificially tone copper and have a convincing result. I do keep any I find in mint or proof sets though. At least I am more confident the colors are natural. The vivid greens are the ones I feel look the nicest. Here are a few I have pulled from sets. I also like the "tiger" toning and furious red that is common on many high luster wheaties. I also have a few of these, which I have shown plenty of times. 1970 proof cents are notorious for wild bullseye toning. Some more attractive than others. As some modern cent collectors know, this year will always make it into a slab with the TPG's. One of these went to Gonzo, but I am not sure which one.
I thought I would also post some that I know to be artificially toned. Although the seller said it wasn;t intentional. He mentioned to me the storage conditions and "agent" that did this to the cents. I believe he was doing it intentionally though. I keep them as good examples of AT toned cents. These are not as convincing as some AT I have seen though. On a side note, these modern cents really baffle me. These were all un-toned and straight from mint sets when I was putting together my Danscos a couple of years ago. I put all the duplicates into an old whitman album and put it away. I recently opened it up to see about 6 cents (out of at least 30) were toning. Attractive? Somewhat, but if I didn't know that they weren't AT I would have said they were. I don't know how much the album itself had to do with the toning, but what I can say is the ones that are toning are on the rows closest to the edge of the album. So they were getting the most airflow. Relevant or coincidence? I really don't know. Obviously some are copper and some are the non-copper composition.
