A coin I have had for awhile but just now feel like posting. Loved the condition & the price was cheap. Herennius Etruscus ( 251 A.D.) AR Antoninianus O: Q HER ETR MES DECIVS NOB C, radiate and draped bust right, seen from behind. R: PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS, Herennius standing left, holding baton and spear. Rome 22mm 4.07g RIC IV 147c; RSC 26
Herennius Etruscus was the son of Trajan Decius and Herennia Etruscilla. He was made Caesar in 250 and co-emperor in early 251. Sometime in the first two weeks of June 251, Herennius Etruscus and his father Trajan Decius became the first Roman emperors to die in battle against a foreign enemy. Herennius died at his father's side, struck in battle by an enemy Goth arrow. Decius survived the initial confrontation, only to be slain with the rest of the army before the end of the day.
=> Mat => awesome coin!! and quite a rare ruler as well => 98th outta 207 on the ol' ERIC-II Rarity list I have an example as well: Herennius Etruscus AR Antoninianus "PIETAS AVGVSTORVM Implements" 250-251 A.D. Rome Mint Diameter: 23 mm Weight: 3.80 grams Obverse: Q HER ETR MES DECIVS NOB C, draped bust right Reverse: PIETAS AVGSTORVM, sprinkler, simpulum, jug and lituus (sacrifical implements of the priest) Reference: RIC IV: 143
Very nice coin Mat. I particularly like the color - I'm not fond of overly-cleaned ancient silver. And Steve, yours ain't chopped liver either.
I only have one, same issue as the OP coin, just not as nice. AR Antoninianus OBV: Q HER ETR MES DECIVS NOB C, Bare-headed and draped bust right REV: PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS, Herennius standing left, holding rod and spear Struck at Rome, 250 AD 3.0g, 20mm RIC 147c
On your reverse, at 7 o clock, looks like hes using a claw to pick up an empty soda can . Damn coca cola was even around during the roman empire
Another type of antoninianus: I wanted to post a colonial but I do not own one. Who had a provincial Herrennius Etruscus?
Man! those are some fine looking coins. I miss you guys on the other side, Bing, Doug, and Jerry. Things are just not the same.
I love that Third Century stuff. As you mentioned, not a good day for dad, either. The defeat at the battle of Abritus AD 251 at the hands of the Goths was one of the darkest days of the Roman Empire. Good stuff, guy
Nothing bad... Just people not liking Ancient statues... I got banned for no reason... I did NOTHING wrong and helped the Mods with others...
Windchild = How did you get banned? I know what I did that the mods did not like. I supported another member. But I didn't think you even got into that hoopla. Too bad on your account, but I'm glad you're here with us. :u*meY:
