I know it is still early 2013, but here are the possible designs for the 2014 America the Beautiful coins for those who are interested. The recommended design for each park is noted in the commentary. http://news.coinupdate.com/america-the-beautiful-quarters-design-candidates-reviewed-by-cfa-1723/
Nice, and I actually agree with most of their recommendations, except that for the Utah quarter I think the second one is better than the first one. Like the shot of that lizard for the Smoky Mountains (Tennessee) quarter lol... but well #3 I'd still say gives a better feel for the park. The really should find some way of incorporating alligators into the design of the Everglades quarter. I like #4, but I'd take out that pelican in the foreground to make room for an alligator somehow. And I agree with the commission, lose the cloud in the background, clutters up the field too much. Or just go with design #6 but lose the clouds. (It would just be unjust to not have a gator on the Everglades quarter lol... they MUST make room for one somehow. Heck, isn't that the first animal virtually everyone first thinks of when they think of the Everglades?) Shenandoah and Great Sand Dunes, I agree with the commission's suggestions exactly. I've seen the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado and personally took a photo much like #6 (#5 is a nice dramatic design but I think #6 gives a better feel for the park). These may make me want to get 5 oz. for some of these lol... especially if they go with a good Florida design.
Really? The Everglades without an alligator? I’d go with #1, with an alligator added, along with a Native American and birds.
I do a fair bit of motorcycling around the backroads of East TN, and the TN-03 really nails the feel of the region, IMHO. The CO-06 would make a really nice coin. The FLA-01 could make a stunning proof.
Great Smoky Mountains - I don't like how they have the eagle flying overhead. Too many US coins already have an eagle. I prefer the log cabin or bears. Shenandoah - good pick without the dorky hiker. Arches and Sand Dunes - they all look fine. Everglades - nice design with the birds. I think the 2014 candidates are much better than what they picked for 2013. The 6th design with the bird, alligator and clouds is pretty good too.
Being from Utah I was planning on buying the Arches puck when it comes out, however the recommended designs stinks in my opinion and looks nothing like the arches, more a hole in the side of a mountain now I don;t know what to do.
I know what you are saying, Tater. I'm from Florida and scratched my head when I saw the recommended design for the Everglades. I'm a big fan of the Everglades and like it a lot down there. Yes, there are many, many great birds there, but there are also many, many alligators. For me, the only acceptable option is #6 which, as sodude pointed out, has both a bird and an alligator. Hopefully, the final selection committee will see the light. Maybe none of them have actually been to the Everglades and have no idea of which wonderful creatures populate it. How there can be a coin produced honoring the Everglades without an alligator is beyond me. The only possible reason for such an obvious oversight would be if the government was somehow involved.
Oh, man, I looked at the Shenandoah designs, and now I'm so homesick for southwestern Virginia that I don't know what to do. I might have to spring for the puck on that one. Especially if they're back down under $50 by then.
Interesting that the CCAC had pretty much the same preference, regarding the Florida/Everglades quarter, as the CFA. Everglades (note that the numbers are actually accumulated "points", see here): "design 1 (0 points), design 2 (3), design 3 (1), design 4 (20), design 5 (5), design 6 (1). Design 4 was recommended." Sometimes you just want to go away from the all-too-obvious that everybody has in mind. Whether the result of such an idea is a good one, that is a different story. Christian
The Everglades, at least for me, is all about the beautiful birds. The alligators may get all the attention, but the millions of birds make the Park vibrant.
How can the Arches quarter not feature the Delicate Arch? It's one of the most memorable sites in the entire park. It has to be design UT-02. For Sand Dunes I would select CO-02. The problem that I see with many of the other designs is that it's too easy to mix up the sand dunes with the mountains in the background. Without color or more detail, it's difficult to know what you're looking at unless you've been there. I agree the Everglades should have a gator.
That was my exact thought initially, however you never quite know the result until you get it in hand. It may be beautiful either way.
