This is the last of the group of 7 coins purchased last week. Actually, I posted this coin in the thread about horses, but, be that as it may, I wanted to give it it's own thread like the others. L Calpurnius Piso Frugi AR Denarius OBV: Laureate head of Apollo r., behind, point control, front, check letter REV: Horseman galloping towards r., holding a palm branch, above, symbol, and below Piso Frvgi / check letter Struck at Rome, 90 BC 3.93g, 19mm Cr340/1, Sydenham 670d. bb/Calpurnia 11 This type refers to the Ludi Apollinares, established in 212 BC. The annual celebration of these games was proposed by the praetor L.Calpurnius Piso, an ancestor of the moneyer. Gens Calpurnia
Bing => I absolutely love that coin!! ... I have a similar version (but it has a whip instead of a palm) ...
These coins were struck in great quantities during the Social War and not well struck, but they have interesting combinations of control letters, in this case what seem to be an S and a G on the Obv and a caduceus and a K on the Rev. Thanks for posting it.
Wow, awesome you did well my friend, what a fantastic group of Ancient coins... :thumb::thumb::thumb:...
Coincidentally, my coin arrived "today" => ultra-awesome (certainly one of my better buys ... sneaky-sweet auction win!!) Ooops, sorry dawg => I didn't mean to scoff your post!! => love ya brother!!
I remember yours Jerry. Your obverse portrait is much better than mine, but, hey, I love the coin anyway. Did you ever look up the two threads you missed? Must have posted them on the wine days. Oh, wait a minute. That's every day. Never mind. Forget I mentioned it. :dead-horse:

Where would he have put those coins? ... hmmm? ... hmmm?, hey what's this? ... a glass of wine!! ... *nice* ... ... ummm, what was I looking for again? ... rabbits? ... no, not rabbits ....... cale? ... no, probably not ... hmmmm?
Well, I'll say that you've started off your collecting year with a bang! I can't wait to see what you do to top these seven.
Well, now I'm broke, so don't look for much in the near future (but I do have my eye on some others).
