Large Cent Tip I kept to myself 2/16

I'm hoping for you that this is just an issue of the seller wanting to get his money w/o having to wait for the 3-week hold-up from Paypal. However, I also think you need to be cautious if you chose another payment method which will leave you without some kind of assurance. I was defrauded in a similar way some years ago by somebody claiming to have a blocked Paypal account and asking me to send the money to another Paypal account. I was too trusting.

This is a scarce coin at R5+ (although I have seen quite a few over the last year or so) - I sincerely hope you get it.

Under these circumstances, I wouldn't dream of sending payment outside of eBay. Sure, you have "recourse" on a check -- but that's why he'll say "I'll send it as soon as the check CLEARS".

He may have the actual coin in hand. He may have stolen it; he may have inherited it from someone who knew more about the coin. It seems more likely, though, that he "borrowed" the photos, and that's as close to the coin as he's ever come.

BTW, I'm sure PayPal does have this money on a longer hold, since this guy just burst upon the scene Friday with $3K in total sales closing on one day. They're no fools, either. I believe it's standard for them to hold funds with new sellers.

He only has a feedback of 7, either he is new to the Bay or he opens new accounts often because of previous XYZ activity. It's hard to say, but Mr. Marshall is running quite a risk if he decides to send a check or money order.

All of his feedback is as a buyer over the last few days so maybe I would reconsider what I posted earlier about sending a check.

Low feedback plus the picture from the ebay sale is the exact picture from the Heritage sale. Worth a shot at bidding, but in my opionion there were two red flags before the auction ended.

Best of luck, you deserve it with all the tips you give. But I agree with others, I would not move this sale outside of ebay/paypal.

When eBay sellers don't get the price they expect, they often (in my cases) say the coin is no longer available (stolen, etc)...and cancel the auction. Not much a Buyer can do.

I worry that a Seller will grab some pictures off the internet, sell the "image" of a coin they don't own, ship some trash coin, and simply claim "Buyer shenanigans" if a dispute is opened.

I've often thought this could be easily happen with OBW silver coin rolls. Take a real OBW roll, empty out the coins and refill it with crappy clad coins. Who's going to open an OBW roll if the end coins look original and it's in a tight, authentic paper roll? How many people would actually open the roll before the dispute period is over? If the Buyer opened the roll and filed a dispute, who would believe the Buyer?

Ok, so this is only my opinion. So this seller has a few coins listed and they're all high dollar coins, and then a chain saw and a weed wacker? If this was just sold on ha then maybe contact them and see if they can get in touch with the buyer of that coin to make sure it hadn't been stolen. If the seller is new I know PayPal will hold money(sold a ps3 the day it came out on eBay after waiting in line for 27 hours, held my money until it could be proven that it was delivered- I wasn't new) my guess would be that these are all stolen along with the chain saw and the weed wacker, but that's just my opinion.

First. let me assure you that I won't be sending money without some type of trusted third party brokerage. I've already contacted Heritage and they couldn't or wouldn't help now that the coin has been successfully delivered after their involvement in the Clover Sale at Long Beach. I've also contacted Doug Davis who has a website with information on stolen coins. He hasn't returned my eMail, but I don't think he'll even get it till Monday.

My biggest concern is that this coin was never in the seller's possession. But the information on the reeding is not a part of the Heritage writeup and known by only us copperheads. Of course, I don't see how the reeding can even be seen on a PCGS holder of that type. It would have to come from associated written notes, so this makes me thing perhaps he does have the coin.

I certainly hope there is an honest explanation to this, but that possibility seems to be dwindling.

Why ever would you post about a score of this nature only hours after winning it? Don't you realize that not all folks that peruse coin forums are of high ethical value? Some are downright scumbags.

    (Ref: http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=746518 )

It is, after all, totally possible that someone saw your post and then contacted the seller with a better offer. It's happened before and will continue to happen until folks keep their eBay wins under their hats until AFTER they've received the coin.

As for the listing itself, I can't help but wonder why someone would win this coin on Heritage for $1,116.25 and then turn around and list it on "eBay" without even mentioning its provenance. Unless, of course, the seller wasn't the original Heritage buyer?

But then, look at the seller. An eBay member since Jun 2012 but only 8 feedback and all as a buyer occuring between Feb 14th and Feb 16th.

I expect that this was never a valid nor authentic listing

I think that Marshall should be grateful that he received a refund as this was obviously a bogus listing by perhaps a hijacked eBay account.

Marshall...we all feel for ya. Good news that you came out of it unscathed (thanks for sharing). With an eye like yours, I predict many profitable scores on the horizon! :thumb:

I'm pretty sure those of you who smelled a rat have a good nose. Today, another buyer has given the seller negative feedback for the same reason. I looked at the coin he purchased and found it too was the first listing that pulls up on Heritage when you search for S-26 and it's photo was from there as well. An this one just sold earlier this month for over $7,000.

I do not believe the seller ever had possession of the items he's 'selling'.

The seller probably didn't realize paypal would hold his money for at least 14 days. He probably figured he could make some quick cash, withdraw it and never be seen again.
Well Marshall, at least you will not lose money. To bad it seemed to be all bogus.

All his photos were questionable. I wondered if he simply picked images of coins similar to his and used them without mentioning this, but it does not matter either way. Sorry to see your efforts and a would-have-been great pick wasted.

Hmmm. You could have avoided this train wreck if only you'd shared the tip! ;)

I would have felt much much worse if this scam had been successful and one of my friends on CT had been the victim because I offered the tip.

That I was disappointed is far better than the alternative.

I think it's easy to take for granted your generosity in sharing these tips. I'm sorry to hear about the scam, but glad to hear you dodged the bullet. I hope another great chance comes along that you can keep to yourself.

That sure would have been a nice one, though! ;-)

Yes, of course, I hope the wink made it clear enough I goofing on the irony of the situation -- first catching an opportunity with sharp eyes, and then finding that in this case you would have been spared the mess if you hadn't been so alert. Sometimes that's the way life goes; I'm glad to hear that in this case the potential victims have been protected. This wasn't a serious lament; of course it's good not many people saw this!
