Well not quite a newp, but I just got to editing the images tonight. I know this is basically an entry-level Denarius and it's not a big deal, but hey, I'm at the entry level... Let's see yours!
Carcalla AR Denarius OBV: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT, laureate head right REV: P M TR P XIIII COS III P P, Pax running left holding branch & scepter Struck at Rome, 211 AD 3.11 grams, 18mm RIC 184
Caracalla AR Denarius OBV: IMP CAE MAVR ANT AVG P TRP - Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right REV: FIDES PVBLICA - Fides standing right, holding corn ears and fruit dish Struck at Rome 198 AD (a much younger Caracalla - perhaps before he turned into a monster) 3.0g, 18mm RIC 24a
I mean there's an abundance of them in decent grades at reasonable prices. They're not rarities, nor do they require any esoteric knowledge to pursue. Now if only Caracalla wasn't such a nasty SOB, it might make owning the coin a bit more enjoyable. But I suppose if we only collected coins minted by beneficent rulers, our collections would be tiny.
JA, very nice coin, great details, i bought a bronze Caracalla, turned out to be fake.., i've been looking for a good detailed Caracalla coin, but they seem kind of expensive..$70-$90
I need a bit of help reading the legends on this coin - they're more complicated than what I have on other pieces. Let me know if I've got this right... ANTONINVS PIUS AUG - Caracalla's given first name, the dutiful, augustus GERM - ?? P M - Pontifex Maximus TR P XVIII - The 18th issuance of Tribunicia Potestas? COS IIII - Consul, fourth issuance? Or is the IIII not a number? If it's 4, why not IV? P P - Pater Patriae Do the issuance numbers for TR and COS narrow the date of this coin at all? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Germ: Germanicus COS IIII: Fourth Counsulship = 213 AD Caracalla's first Tribunicia Potestas was June 2, 198, while his second was December 10 198. It was renewed annually on the latter date. At his death in April 212, he was in the course of his TR P XX
Unless otherwise noted, the Romans kept the minting of precious metals in Rome. I do have some minted elsewhere, such as my Augustus Denarius I posted with the Mooo thread. It was minted at Lugdunum and I have a Sep Severus from Alexandria, Egypt and another from Emesa. But if it's not noted, you can assume it was Rome. I'm sure DS can provide better details than me, but this is my understanding.
Thanks Bing. I had read that article earlier, but I wasn't sure whether there were exceptions to the rule.
