Has anyone seen a type set that goes back further in coin types? Is there such a set out there that has the hole for the flowing hair type or a hole for wreath or chain cents, etc.? Thanks
Yes there are Library of Coins albums that include many of the earlier types not included in the Dansco albums. I believe that they have been out of print for a while and it is difficult to find used albums.
Both Library of Coins and Whitman produces type set albums into the 60's. They both had one for small coins (up to and included quarters) and one for larger coins. The Library of Coins (which i have) has 67 holes just for the small coins. To put that in perspective, the Dansco "complete" type set has 72 holes, which includes bi-centennial coins and a state quarter. To fill the LOC album would be near impossible, or at least insanely expensive. I also have the Whitmans, which are fairly easy to get. But finding any of them in good condition can be difficult. Especially the LOC. I haven't compared the Whitman and the LOC but I suspect they probably call for the same coins. Anyway, here is the LOC Part 1 with the list of coins for it. Mine is near perfect condition because my dad bought it new in the 60's and only put 7 coins it. Look up the cost on some of these coins! eek. As an example: A G4 1793 Chained Cent is at least 6K lol.
I actually thought: "hmm, maybe I will try and fill it", even with holed and damaged coins. Still couldn't afford it.
I have an older whitman album that is called United States Type Set Large Coins Number Two and it only has halfs and dollars the earliest half is 1794-1795 it has 13 holes for halfs the latest one is 1948 the dollars start with 1794-1795 and has 8 holes ending with the Peace Dollar and this is the kind of album that has the clear inserts so you can see both sides of the coins and has two pages one for half dollars and one for dollars its a great little album but when I priced those first coins and saw they were thousands of dollars to tens of thousands I realized the only way I could do the album was to go back in time to 1938 when you could buy the early coins for $8 for the flowing hair dollars and $5 for the flowing hair half dollars according to my "standard price list of United States Coins from 1938 by Scott Stamp & Coin Co. I showed this book in a youtube video search for richcali21 or my old coin books the 1793 chain cent was $15 for Good condition wow
Do a type set with key dates or better dates. Instead of an easy wheat cent do and 09-s VDB or a better date. I have a friend who is going it. Also cool varieties could be used.
I'd have to say the St Gaudens double eagle complete set is going to be next to impossible from both a logistics and legality standpoint
Thanks for all the information, I want to put together this set. Does anyone have the LOC album for sale, or know of one for sale that is fairly cheap?
