So I'm reading Chris' post (#12) in this thread.....http://www.cointalk.com/t222911/#post1643463......and I says to myself 'let me go find that spare '05 set of mine'. Hey it's worth a shot, right? Well, no soap for me on the error/variety (whatever) but along with that '05 set I had a few '87 and '85 proof sets in their original boxes. I opened the '87s 'cause I figured I ain't seen these sets in awhile. Nothing. Just mirrored blast white surfaces, but when I open the '85s I see a little action with the hazy toning. Especially on the nickles. [cue the Hendrix song] And interesting start to some (what I hope will be) nice toning......... It pays to check your old stash from time to time. Ya never know what's cookin'..........
Most all of my 70s, and some of my early 80s proof sets have toned halves, quarters, dimes & nickles.
Hmm... I'm now gonna have to go through all my proof sets and see if I've got any brewing... I just bought either a '69 or '70 set with some nice blue toning starting on the nickel dime and quarter, got the whole set for $7, and bought it specifically because of that. I'll see if I can get good pics (usually not able to) and post 'em.

Just FYI I suspect that many understand that when Hendrix wrote Purple Haze that it was a type of LSD. Today, "Purple Haze" is used to describe a potent type of marijuana.

Drug like Lsd that can+will kill. Nickels do tone at time with odd colors some even toned almost all black.I its was some thing wrong with the mix but that 1952-63
I've heard tell about the 'black' nickles Angelo. None in the collection though. [edit to add] I don't envy you that experience in the Delta. Hard times back then.......

Dang...I feel like I have heard that about Purple Haze in the past, but I never really knew, knew it was about LSD. I always kind of thought it was about Mary-J, who knew? Guess my generation probably missed out on that one, lyrics still kind of apply for pot tho.
