hello all, new to the forum but definitely not new to the website. first off i gotta say this is an awesome community and its nice having an outlet to come get advice and information from other collectors of all types. so basically i just finished graduate school last may and was looking to get back to adding to my collection. i think i have a bias for pre 1964 silver and the ase's now, mostly been adding to my ase's. the question i have is on the infamous 2012 s silver eagle 2-coin set. i was hoping to get some advice on what a fair price is for this set in pr70 with (or without) mercanti labels. found a nice first strike set for around $390, maybe i'm just too anxious to buy it but i definitely want to pick one up before they aren't fairly "new" anymore and the price skyrockets. then again the price could stay the same or drop and i'd be hosed. any suggestions? i'm not looking for a quick turnaround, i just want these to my self. thanks in advance for any info!

My advice, wait 10 years. By then you'll likely see that you shouldn't buy them at all.

Agreed. Those two bullion coins are not worth buying at $390 no matter the grade IMO.

If you are buying for your own pleasure, then do whatever you like IMO. If you are asking us if today's price is the lowest these will go, I would agree with other posters here. Most modern products drop in price, unless its a bullion play and bullion goes up. You could always protect against that by buying bullion today, and in the future sell the bullion and buy the coins.

Again though, if owning these gives you pleasure, and you really want them, then I happily say buy them. I never wish to stand between a collector and the coins he loves. :) Its a hobby, and if you treat the money you spend on coins as an expense, you never have to worry about your coin expenditures.

hey guys thanks for the feedback i appreciate it. i know some people arent fond of the ase series but i do enjoy the design and it was first minted on my birth year so i like it. but there is a line to be drawn and i dont want to waste money on coins that will just possibly depreciate or become worth less than what i spent. i saw how low the mintages were, especially for the reverse proof, so i started wondering if a pr70 set could be worth something in the long term.

another thing i have with the ase's is trying to gauge if it's worth getting them in proof to start assembling a set or just going with uncirculated for bullion, but thats a whole new can of worms.

If you don't mind having an NGC Label, they are going for about $305 or so on eBay. If you don't mind 69's, eBay is a good option or ModernCoinMart. I think the greysheet has a bid of $140.00 on the set with original packaging (good luck finding one at that price though). I don't think this set is a great investment though, the 2011 was a much better one.

yeah i've seen the 69's for around $180 at best, and with the number greysheet has it doesn't seem worth it. lets say i put the money into collecting them as a series starting with 2011, maybe evenetually back to 1986, all in pr70 dcam. would that be worth it 20 or 30 years down the road? i mean i do enjoy the proof appearance of these coins but if they will be nothing more than bullion i cant see the point in spending that kind of money. the lowest i've seen them now in uncirculated is $32.67, and a nice proof is typically like $100 or so.

Let me put it to you this way, the prices of these coins in 70 have been going down for years now. And I don't mean just a little bit down. Ten to twelve years ago they cost 4 figures, today they cost 3 figures.

What does that tell you ?
