The coin on the left is from Iran. Though I'm sure I can find a way to convert the date from the Arabic calender, I can not find it's denomination. Now, the coin on the right is from Japan, and is clearly marked as 20 sen. However, I have had no luck at all in translating Japanesse dates. Any help would be appreciated.
The Iranian coin is a 1 Rial dated 1354 (1975), an FAO issue, KM-1183. The Persian '4' is different than the standard Arabic '4'. The Japanese 20 sen (Y-24) is dated year 38 of the reign of emperor Mutsuhito (Meiji era) which is equivalent to 1905. Here's a link to Arabic and Japanese numeral translations.
Tough as it is to grade from pictures, my guess is that you have a borderline F/VF. That 5.39g of .800 silver has a bullion value of 80-85¢, but the 2005 Krause gives it's value as $5 F/$10 VF/$20 XF/$60 Unc. and the JNDA spread is ¥900-20,000 (approx. $8-180). I paid a little over $45 for an XF example on eBay about a year ago.
Ok, thanks a lot. When I bought the coin for $2, I had assumed it wasn't any earlier than the 50's, as the person had no experience in coins.
Not by me. The person I bought it from does not deal with coins. Which means she may have at some time. On the other hand, it's possible it has been sitting in its bag for several years, not being exposed to the elements.
