Hello, I came across a silver 2p coin from 1994 in my drawer today and it started a debate about its origins, authenticity and so on. Can anyone tell me a bit about it? Thanks Lee
I don't think he means a maundy piece. Tell us, by 'silver' do you mean the coin is a silver colour, or that it's made of silver?
Don't think either that this is a Maundy coin, since these have designs that are quite different from the regular coins. Here is an image of the 2006 Maundy Set including a silver 2p piece: http://www.royalmint.com/RoyalMint/web/MultimediaFiles/UK0613SS_2.JPG On certain occasions the regular UK coins are also made in silver versions, like this year's "The Queen's 80th Birthday Collection" set: http://www.royalmint.com/RoyalMint/web/MultimediaFiles/UK0613SS_3.JPG My catalog lists a silver 2p coin issued (probably as part of a similar proof set) in 1996. But your coin may well be a regular one that then was silver plated by a third party ... Christian
