Was just going through some junk silver I bought at the pawn shop and I seen it was a 17d. Didn't even realize it was in there when I bought them. What would you grade this?
I was thinking VG-F. The rim is well defined to fall into the VG range, but only about 4 skirt lines visible.
I was going VG details. For those of you pointing to skirt lines, remember that coins struck in 1921 and before have weaker lines.
G6-VG8. Nice coin. I'd have bought it for junk too. I pulled out a nice '16 a while back, I'd grade it VG.
NO, ofcourse you wouldnt buy it for not junk prices. (sarcastic) dude its old, these go for minmum 20+ bucks per in lower grades, and its a nice coversation piece. Anyone would buy it for practically scrap prices.
I throw back '17 D/S Obv/Rev in AG all the time. I could buy 'em for probably $11 or so each, but in those conditions, they're common and not worth spending $11 on. I've been picking through "junk" bins for a couple years now, I think I have a pretty good idea of what's common, what's not, and what they're worth.
TECHNICAL versus MARKET GRADE I believe you'll find the grade to be VG-8 technical, but possible to receive a F-12 Market grade from Top Tier TPG, as this seemingly lesser quality cull-like coin received a VG Details grading: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1917-S-NGC-VG-DETAILS-BENT-OBVERSE-WALKING-LIBERTY-HALF-DOLLAR-50C-EA204-/380543782368?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item589a2d4de0#ht_2913wt_902 If you peruse the current eBay offerings you'll see many comparable listed as "Fine", or TPG graded VG-10.
