Hello. I just acquired this silver dollar dated 1977 and weighing just 8.63 grams . I could not find a trace of it in many catalogs. What could it be ? Appreciate any identification or value estimation . Thanks . Charles .
It's a privately made copy of a pattern for the mini-dollar that would become the Susan B. Anthony dollar.
It looks like the Gasparro's Miss liberty design for a new Susan B Anthony dollar. It was available at the ANA convention as a medal. It never became an official coin. Not sure how many were made,
Unfortunately, at the time (and probably still today), LIBERTY was not a Politically Correct subject for consideration on the coins surface.
Back when the first mini dollar was being proposed they ran polls of proposed design subject and the Liberty design won the popular poling by a landslide. Susan B Anthony came in a distant eighth.
out of curiosity, what were the other candidates? could only imagine what the 2 through 7 spots were.[ thanks walter QUOTE=Conder101;1643684]Back when the first mini dollar was being proposed they ran polls of proposed design subject and the Liberty design won the popular poling by a landslide. This is a really interesting design! Too bad it never made it onto a circulating coin... I like it better than the Susie B's and the Sacageweas.
[/QUOTE] Martha Washington was in the running. As Condor noted, Miss Liberty was a big favorite. Susan B. Anthony won out because the Womens Lib. movement pushed for an actual woman that accomplished something of note.
