Large Cent Tip I kept to myself 2/16

I love giving tips on these. But sometimes I have to get a little selfish. I recognized this particular coin (not just the variety) as having been sold just last September as part of the Phillip Clover sale. It was unattributed and a very nice provenance wasn't even mentioned. This particular coin has been in the hands of legends.

This is the auction I won.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/181078846703?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

This is the same coin from the Phillip Clover Sale in September.

    http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1174&lotNo=3138

Now it is perhaps unique in that this variety usually has a plain edge where this particular coin has a reeded edge (V) seen on a single example each of S-124, S-125, S-126 and S-142 in 1797 and some early 1798 varieties. Breen mentions seeing one and this is likely the one he saw since he was an associate of Sheldon, one of the previous owners. Were this given a sub-variety as others with differing edge devices, it would be R8+.

Sorry guys. I couldn't share this one.

Excellent catch, Marshall, at an incredible price. Congratulations!

Curiously, I was able to pick-up an S-124 myself some time ago, for a very (very) low price. But yours is in far better condition.

For those of us not members on ha what did that one at auction sell for? It's not showing a price on this end.

    Nice coin though. Great details!

Well, the first sign that it might be too good to be true. My Paypal payment has been refunded. I don't know what this means. I will not speculate on the reason just yet.

I hope the transaction works out, that was a very nice find and I was glad to see you get it (as a beneficiary of past Large Cent Tips).

Not a gentlemanly thing to do; especially without an explanation. With the seller's feedback number, he is playing with fire.

I do hope that this somehow turns out okay for you as it is sad to think of the time wasted over someone (possibly) playing games.

I hope it's as innocent as Paypal not having banking information for the seller. I'd hate to think a seller could just refuse payment and void the auction contract. But if I remember my old Law Classes, Real Estate is one of the few transactions which requires specific performance rather than just monetary damages. I probably can't require specific performance with a coin auction. But I won't get ahead of myself just yet. Perhaps it will be resolved.

Well, lets see. The Heritage auction went for $1800? And the guy just sold it on e-bay for what? Hmmmmmm.......

    Sounds like seller remorse.

Well Marshall, with all the great research and time to put helpful tips and advice on these threads, you deserve to gift yourself. Hopefully this Paypal mess will be squared away and you get your coin.

Nothing against you Marshall.....you've got the sharp eye, but why the devil would someone sell a coin such as this on a miserable venue such as e-bay?

Man I want this transaction to go through, but Red Flags are everywhere. I just received this with an address below it.

"Paypal wanted to hold all my funds for three weeks and i aint allowing that so i refused and refunded the money if you still would like to complete the sale i accept check or money orders only and i aint using paypal anymore that company is crazy

The auction item sale slip send with your payment and will ship as soon as payment is recieved thanks and sorry for the delay i refunded it because it would take a month using paypal "

I have never sold using eBay or Paypall so i don't know if these statements are true, but they really don't seem harsh for a company offering to act as a transaction broker.

Is there a way to contact a PERSON with eBay to find out if they are being bypassed as well as paypal?

Or was it a scam from the beginning and the coin safely nestled with it's happy owner and completely unaware his coin (at least it's image) is being used?

But if it's simply sellers remorse...

But of course, my funds are now tied up with paypal until the refund is processed. But I have no beef with paypal.

Their requirements seem reasonable to me.

I have an idea... Perhaps if I used this as an opportunity to find out how HE 'acquired' it. Stay tuned...

"While I await my refund from paypal, perhaps you might provide me some information on whether this coin has any notes from previous owners, such as their thoughts on the reeding etc. I'm also interested in how you obtained this lovely specimen. I'm a real lover of the old copper and wondered if you were as well or if you are a merchant and this happens to be your merchandise? I'm always interested in any other old copper you might wish to sell."

This is my response. I hope it's both inquisitive and non threatening.

I do know, in some cases, PayPal can place a hold on incoming funds for up to three weeks. Rarely, though, does it take this long for the payment to clear. Did the seller have relatively low feedback or few sales?

The other thing with paypal and ebay is that if there are conflicts they put everything on hold for people. If there is a dispute in ebay - both ebay and paypal put holds on stuff to "protect the parties involved". It's possible this seller is in a dispute over another item and paypal has put a hold on their account. The month timeframe might not be for funds to clear but for the issue to be resolved.

As to this particular coin - I'm going to assume the seller was unaware of the coins history. It seems to easy to just pull the info from the HA website if the seller knew about it - why wouldn't he/she do that.

If you are sening another payment - send a personal check since he said check or money order. He might have meant a cashiers check but you want to have some recourse

That's the last thing I'd do. The seller has a real low sales count. I smell a rat.
