I completed my Walking Liberty early this year, so there's nothing left for me to collect in US coins. It took me about two years to get the 10 coins that my all from pocket change set was missing when I picked it up after a layoff of more than 30 years.
I've got a modest collection of $5 gold half eagles. I've got 8 of them now. I'm thinking that it's going to take me years to do a type set. I'm also collecting the silver edition of the US proof sets for the years that include the state quarters. I've got all years except for 2001 and 2003.
Thanks everyone for the responses. Its interesting to see what other people are interested in/working on.
Gee, give me a minute. I have around a thousand in my tribes. Some live in different villages(books), and some have their own t.p.'s(flips). All I know is they keep multiplying! Some are over a 100 to 150 years old.
The Liberty Head Quarter Eagle When I get home, I will change my avatar to reflect my coin of choice now. Currently, I am working on a Walking Liberty Half Dollar set, No Motto Saint set, Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarter set, an MS-60+ Indian Head Cent set, and Liberty Head Quarter Eagles. I have about 10 Walkers, 1 No Motto Saint (need 2 more for the No Motto set), 3 MS-60+ IHCs (not counting my G+ set), soon to have 1 Type 1 Standing Liberty (1917 MS-65 full head), and 2 Quarter Eagles. Out of all of those, the Quarter Eagles are what really have me going. I only have 2, but there is just something about those small gold coins with their odd face value that gets me. The Eagle on the reverse is nice and Lady Liberty's head is just perfect. And as stated in the other post, I casually collect State Quarters from my pocket change.
Currently I am most interested in Barber dimes, Capped Bust half dimes, 3 cent silvers, 3 cent nickels, and Standing Liberty Quarters.
The AGE,ASE and APE Eagles...all dates uncirc and proof all denominations. That will keep me busy until I depart this salty ole Earth..:goofer: :goofer: :goofer: Wish me luck!! RickieB
I have completed many sets over the years (Lincolns, Indianheads, two cent, three cent silver, all but two three cent nickel, shield , V, Buffalo, and Jefferson nickels, all but three seated half dimes, all but two mercuries, roosevelts, Washingtons, Kennedys, and Ikes) But the set I have enjoyed the most and have worked on the longest is my die variety set of early date large cents. I currently have about 257 of the 295 Sheldon numbered varieties. I lack seven varieties of being complete from 1795 to 1814. Well I would say that I am a "serious" collector, at least by my standards but I don't have any problem with circulated coins. The average grade of my large cent collection is G-4. Personally if a collector poo-poos circulated coins then, unless they strictly collect moderns, I figure they probably aren't serious collectors. Just someone with money that happens to like coins.
My favorite is whatever I'm currently working on. I'm working on a date set of Morgan/Peace dollars. Already got the 1893-1895 dated coins, just need to get a nice 1921 Peace dollar, then attractive examples of the more common dated coins. Someday I may flesh it out to a full date/mintmark set, but I don't know if I'll ever be able to afford it (atleast for the Morgans, a full set of Peace dollars is certainly possible). Also working on Canadian ten cents set from 1938 to present. Have all the silver issues, just missing some of the modern issues that I refuse to pay too much for, being that they are currently circulating at face value up north. Possible future collections include Mercury Dimes, Canadian five cent pieces, something Barber, or pushing my Canadian ten cents collection back further.
And it looks like I'm the only one working on a half-cent set. I figure once I'm done by date (ignoring proof-only years for starters) I'll get started on varieties, and maybe eventually die states. Fish
As far as US Mint issued circulating coinage goes, my interests are mainly in Jefferson nickels. As far as "collecting" goes, I'm mostly interested in Merchant tokens from my local area/state. I also enjoy reading everything I can get my hands on, and conversing with fellow hobbiests online.
I've got a set of silver eagles, the only thing I've completed so far. I'm kinda working on two sets of Lincolns, one set in B.U. from current on back as far as I can go which is into the late 30s so far and then from 1909 to 1934 in F-VF. So far I'm lacking the 1909s, 1909s vdb and 1914d on that one. I'll probably look into getting the 1909s next tax time. I'm six short on my IHC set and I need to get a 1857 flying eagle and that'll be it for the small cents. Not even gonna worry about the 1856. When I feel like something different I've got some buffalos and liberty nickels to work on and a start on the walking liberty halfs as well as a type set of a sort which pretty much is whatever catchs my eye and is affordable. Also have some civil war store cards that were put out by merchants from the town I live in. I recently got into those and found them awfully interesting so I dunno where that's gonna wind up.
I collect... coins I hate to admit it, but i am a little scatter brained. I don't really collect one type of anything. I think this is because my main collection interest is in commemorative coins (classic US). They are so hard to find, that i tend to occupy myself with other stuff. I actually have two coin funds, one of them is for commems, the other for "other". My commem fund is actually getting pretty big, my problem is not money (as in the money to buy the coin) its in actually finding the coin i want! I will say that i buy anything "pretty" with nice toning, so i guess i collect toned coins. I really like Franklin's, and will purchase pretty high grade satiny Franklin's regardless of the date/mm even if i already own one. its an addiction.
