    I'm just wondering if these machines are accurate. It sometimes seems like I dump in more coins than it
    gives me credit for. How can you trust the machine to give an accurate count?

    Well, you can count them out and then dump them in to see how accurate the machine is I suppose. It's either that or just trust them. If you're gonna eat the charges they stick you with why worry anyway.

    I really don't see why anyone would go through rolls and then pay to get rid of whatever they don't want. I mean after you spend however long sorting through $500 in halves and then factor in the time and gas, wear and tear on your vehicle dealing with picking them up and dropping them off when you're done as well as the fees involved with getting rid of the excess and the hassle of dealing with the bank employees is it really worth it? I've thought about trying this but I just don't see where it would pay off, it just sounds like a big hassle in the end for not much of a pay off.

    I know I'm asking a biased crowd but is this something you find profitable or is it just mostly a thrill of the hunt kind of thing? I suppose I'd have to just take the plunge and try it out but I'd like to hear any comments on your results from the people who do this.

    Well, yesterday was an unusually good day, but as it turned out I bought $180 in halves and pulled about $140 in silver out of it at a face value (total cost to me) of $28.50. So it can be profitable, but there is definitely a thrill of the hunt factor involved. It's always exciting to find a rarity. There have been very few times that I have not found anything worth more than the time and cost of doing it. To average out all of my trips to all of my finds... I would be well ahead, which is good, no doubt, but it's the enjoyment of the hobby and the ability to get odd coins at face value that makes it fun.

    Ummm... wait... more roll searchers means dwindling supply... so what I meant to say was NO! It's a complete waste of time, money and energy and only a total fool with no life such as myself would bother... Yeah... that's what I meant.

    Nice. Great find!

    I was talking to a woman who works a gas station today. She said it happens around times when gas prices rise. People dig into the old money they have saved and pay with old silver certificates and silver coins. I guess they cash them in at the banks too.. not knowing what else to do with them.

    Started checking rolls again about two months ago. Here are the stats so far:

    Cents: 604 rolls checked (30,200 coins) yielded a total of 100 wheaties, or about 1 wheatie for every 6 rolls. Based on a quick review of the other messages here, that is an average to poor result. The details:

    1958D = 9
    1958 = 2
    1957D = 9
    1957 = 1
    1956D = 11
    1956 = 2
    1955D = 3
    1955 = 3
    1954S = 3
    1954D = 2
    1953S = 1
    1953D = 5
    1953 = 1
    1952S = 2
    1952D = 4
    1951S = 3
    1951D = 5
    1951 = 1
    1950D = 1
    1946S = 3
    1946D = 2
    1946 = 4
    1945S = 3
    1945D = 3
    1945 = 5
    1944S = 3
    1944 = 2
    1942 = 2
    1941S = 1
    1941 = 1
    1940S = 1
    1937S = 1
    1935 = 1

    Found at least 4 excellent AU condition 1968S and was able to replace just about every memorial cent in the album with something shiny (er).

    Also, checked 850 dimes (17 rolls), turned up only 1 silver (1946), and no luck with silver quarters, after checking 840 (21 rolls). Can't find a branch of my bank that stocks halves.

    I searched $500 in halves today. Not as good as some but not bad. I got 1 1954 Franklin, 1 64 Kennedy, and 15 40%. I also found 1 quarter and a souvenir good luck coin from Wisconsin Dells.

    I still haven't found a single Walker in 4,500 halves searched and only 2 Franklins. Total silver is 16 90% and 58 40%.

    Bruce,
    Well tell me what other coin rolls you can search that will bring a better return on your investment?
    To clarify that, each half dollar costs 50 cents. Find just one 1964 and it is worth at least $4.00.
    Find a 40% silver and it is worth at least a buck. To me that is a great return.
    Plus they are big, easy to handle, and easy to see.
    I got done with looking through 10 rolls of cents. Well I found some varieties, tilted D mintmarks, some double chins and some weird looking cents. But those are not listed in the Redbook, and not even on Coneca. So who is going to buy them? I'll probably just keep them forever especially after the squinting and the standing on my head type of inspecting. Yup I have a 10X loupe too.
    So I find all other coins a pain to look at. Halves are so easy. And I find silver almost every time.
    But now I have way too many half dollars hanging around. But I can't stop either, the return is so repetitive.

    I have to agree with you well said.

    OK I'll bite. For me it is the hunt, mostly. Kind of like a lottery.
    I "could be" out at a bar blowing cash and wasting time. Or at one of the two nearby casinos blowing cash and wasting time. Instead, I'm wasting time searching for silver in my own home in my own easy chair. Plus I'm not blowing money. And I opened an account at the bank where they have the coin counting machine. It costs zero to return the leftovers. I even deposit a few bucks just to make them smile. One teller said "Here comes my coin buddy".
    My Neon gets 36 miles to a gallon, and it is like a little outing every time I go. So it isn't costly at all.
    Silver now went over $12 a troy ounce. Great future forcasting wizzards are predicting $20 an ounce some time in the distance. Someday I can cash in on my finds. Right now, I just hoard the silver halfs I find.
    Sure as most speculation goes, it may not give immediate gains. Well I must mention the 1982S proof I found. I paid 50 cents for it. A bidding war on eBay caused that one coin to sell for $18.50.
    So I made eighteen dollars. I sold a roll of nice 1977P halves found in rolls for $17.00. (my avatar)
    When I found the two 1944 Walkers and the three or four Franklins, that is what clinched it for me. Granted, I have not found anything like that for 4 or 5 months.
    But almost every time I find some silver. I'm hooked. When I don't find anymore silver, I'll quit, maybe.

    The kids and I went to the bank to get some pennies a couple of days ago, but they didn't have enough rolled so they counted out ten dollars worth that somebody had just brought in and put in a bag for us. Somebody must have robbed the piggy bank. Out of ten dollars we took out 142 wheat pennies, 1 steel penny, and 2 indian heads. My daughter (being 6 years old) had a great time looking for the wheat backs. Going through rolls has been a great way to entertain the kids and to get them interested in something other than tv and video games. In the past we have found a few rpms and a 1998 wide am.

    I picked up a few rolls of quarters the other day and got two 1985-P small motto quarters. These aren't especially rare but they're tough enough to make them fun to look for and unusual to find. This coin is getting a decidedly tough to find in nice XF or better and one of these was an attractive AU-50 coin.

    The easiest way to spot it is the distance between the B in LIBERTY and Washington's head. This distance is much greater on the small bust.

    I suspect this coin is very scarce in unc with no more than about fifty pieces in existence.

    That's what I was thinking. Also I think it deserves "first strike" designation because it's the first thing that struck the pavement.
