A friend of mine was going to send a few coins in using the economy rate, which is $20 per. PCGS Estimate is 20-30 days, but current turn around times are 40. I feel sorry for the world coin folks, for economy the turn around is 55 days.
Yes. Any service company that has an expanding base (customers) sometimes has a need for more employees to handle the times when they are overwhelmed. Unfortunately, this particular company would need to hire more graders. This job not only requires highly specialized knowledge and years of experience so one can grade quickly and consistently, but also know how to spot counterfeiting and skilled attempts to eliminate or hide defects. In addition to being able to work in the dark with one bright light source. That's a tough set of requirements.
30 days sounds about right. Sometimes more, sometimes less. The Long beach show just finished. The time always seems a bit longer after a major show. I don't see any need to hire more graders, the time frame seems acceptable to me for the economy rate. If you must get the coins back quicker, that is easily done, for a higher rate of course.
One thing you have to remember too...is you are talking about the economy service. If they suddenly get busy or backed up...the economy service submissions probably don't get priority.
Wouldn't you rather they take a bit longer to grade, rather than rushing to hire someone? That's not a position that's easily filled and making a mistake in hiring could be extremely costly to them and you.
I'm thinking they were looking for a few graders a while back. There was an ad somewhere. Maybe it was old?
I love waiting on grades. I joined PCGS in 2006 and sent in a 2006-W Proof Gold Buffalo, one coin, one submission. Didn't know what to expect. Then one day I got THE email...your grades are ready. BAM !!! PR70 on my first coin.....I was hooked. Think I had about $825 in coin and grading fees...
As of today, in the PCGS price guide, a 68 (or under) lists at $1690, a 69 lists at $1770 and a 70 Lists at $2250. I'd say that the fee is worth it.
Well, this one sure squashes any negative comments on economy submissions http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=880788 I know, it's an anomaly, but still, 6 days after sending it in? Maybe new graders would actually grade your bodybagged Morgan that HAD to be NT, but you had reviewed, and still came back bagged as a '91', 'questionable color'.
I think there is a minimum years of numismatic experience required to apply for a job as a grader, no? He also needs a resume, which he feels he doesn't need one. The coin market is good and business is booming at PCGS. We need some talent to help us grade all the coins people are sending us. If you're a really good coin grader... If you'd like to spend your days looking at coins.... If you'd like to have a very stable, high paying job... Then PCGS is the place for you! What we need. PCGS is looking for experienced, highly skilled graders. We need both U.S. and World graders. We need both graders who want to work in California at PCGS and/or graders who would enjoy traveling to shows to grade coins in the United States and/or Asia and Europe. If you love coins, it's an exciting opportunity for you and one of the plum jobs in the coin industry. Make Money, Have Fun, Dazzle! That's the PCGS company motto. If you want to join us and make money and have fun while together we continue to dazzle the coin market, then contact us today! Send your resume to PCGS President, Don Willis by email to dwillis@collectors.com. Or if we know you already, just give Don a call 949-833-0600. Neither was I. That is a legitimate question. It would only make sense for PCGS, ad NGC for that matter, to have such a requirement so as to not have just anyone off the street applying for that position when they have no numismatic, or grading numismatics, experience. However, refer to post #16, as I found that on the PCGS website.
What really upsets me as an long time collector is.. This new PCGS reconsideration service. Get it right the first time and everyone wins. Many people don't know that at one time many graders worked at all tpg's Anacs, ICG, NGC and PCGS. But today many still bash ICG and Anacs for mess ups in the past. Funny thing though, I had over 20 coins in the last 5 years sent back to the big ones for wrong/inferior grades. Now just another way to gouge collectors pockets with Reconsideration Fees. Turns me off. So.. I know how to save money and get my coins in a few weeks with the correct grades. Not at PCGS.
