Hello everyone, My name is David and I've been collecting Roman coins now for nearly 10 years. My focus is Flavian denarii, an era I've been interested in since I was 13 or 14 when I first read a translation of Suetonius. In addition to Roman coins I love reading about ancient history and collecting maps and atlases.

I've been a member here for quite a while and hope to contribute more posts in the future. There certainly is quite a lively little group here!

Me too. Forum is a great place when you need advice and assistance from the experts; however, not being an "expert" I always feel intimated by some of the members there. Here, it's just a bunch of collectors from beginners to long time hoarders who like to show off their coins and discuss them in a friendly environment. Don't get me wrong. We have what I call some experts here as well. I guess it boils down to the informal chatter that makes it welcoming. :high5:

 

My name is Ron, I go by SKI or echizento. I first started collecting coins in the 1960's as a kid for a few years. I entered the military in 1970 did two tours of duty in Viet Nam. Than spent another 19 years serving in various locations in Asia and the US. I retired in 1992 with just under 22 years of service. After the military I was a federal leo until a few years ago when I became disabled. I started collecting US and World coins again about 15 years about. A little over 11 years ago I bought my first ancient coin. After that day I sold all but a few US coins and now just collect ancients. My interests are mostly in Roman and Byzantine coins.

 

SKI: what was your MOS? When I was in Vietnam I was on a three man District Team with MACV in the Delta (IV Corps). How about you?

Since I don't know what one is, I guess I never used one. You'll have to enlighten me.

 

It was a gun, which had a part made by Mattel.
The nickname was the Mattie, due to this relation.

 

What type of "gun"? We used to say our M16s were made by Mattel. When I first went into the Army I was trained on the M14. The M14 had a wood stock and was fairly heavy. When the M16 replaced the M14 and it seemed the stock was made from molded plastic like a play gun. I hated the M16 when it first came out. It jammed easily, especially in the jungles, heat, humity and mud of Vietnam. It seemed the M14 would never jam no matter how much mud we waded through. I also used an M1 Carbine with a pistol grip and a Thompson .45 cal sub-machine gun. Couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with it, but it made so much noise it would scare off the VC.

 

The M16 sounds right... the grip was made by Mattel if I remember correctly.

 

because I can't use an explicative- that's sooo bad butt! Imagine.

 

The new gun of chose, the 300 blackout, its 30cal on a m16 platform, same lower, 223 rd 45mm ground to 35mm re sized to 30cal. lot of special ops use this and a few wild pig hunters..awesome...:thumb:

Bing I was in the Navy attached to TF116 on a swift boat. I operated a dual 50 cal. After the war I also went back and was involved in the evacuation of Saigon in 75. I was on one of the carriers and was one of those guys pushing Hueys off the flight deck. I spent 5 years in the Navy. Got out and joined the Coast Guard where I worked in Search and Rescue for a time. Than I was the Office in Charge of a Law Enforcement Team. I retired as a CO of a Coast Guard Station.

Ski, I remember you telling me you were in the Navy. Where I was at in the Delta, there were few roads, but we had a Boston Whaler with twin 40 horse Evinrudes and a .50 cal mounts to travel up and down the Mekong. One of my closest calls to getting killed was on that boat. We took fire while on a mission up river and one of the engines gave out. I thought we couldn't get out of there fast enough. I never had a desire to be on a boat since!
