I have a friend of mine that has consigned a 3 coin set to my auction next weekend. This set is the 1995 3 coin Civil War commemorative proof set. It has the $5 Gold coin, the $1 Silver coin and the $.50 clad half. I can find the normal set on Ebay, but this is not the normal set. All 3 are framed with a copy of the artist's original drawing for the obverse coin design. There is paperwork in a pouch on the back of the frames for each coin. My friend said that this was a special edition from the US Mint and this is how they came. Does anybody here know anything about this set? How many were done? Any information will be greatly appreciated.
I have a few of the sets but they were not pkged like that. I am betting this is from something like HSN or maybe one of those repackaging places that puts the lipstick on the coins and advertises they are worth Thousands.
I didn't see anything on the paperwork saying it came from the Mint like this. The paperwork just talks about the bill that passed in 94 or 95 for this commemorative and the mint paperwork on the coins themselves. I tend to agree that this was put together by one of the home shopping channels, etc. but I really like it. For once I think they did a good job putting something together. I did send the artist, Don Troiani, an email I will let you know if I hear back from him.
Funny, I just bought a similar set a couple days ago, but it didn't have the gold coin, just the 90% silver dollar and clad half.
