The Booker T Washington commemorative circulated single coins P D &S for the years 1948 49 50 & 51 are easy to find , but the 1947 P D & S are a different story. EDITED---Please no offers to buy/sell/trade---please place that kind of offer in the OPEN forum
not sure what you mean by the 1947's being difficult, all 3 mints produced 100,000 of them for that year. The tough dates are 1948-1951 with the exceptions being the 1950-S and 1951(p) 500,000+ mintages... the toughest dates to get a complete set of are the 1949's, only 6,000 sets produced.
I must sound like an idiot but Ive never heard of the Booker T Washinton commemorative and why would they put it in circulation
Time to get out the history books or at least google this one. Booker Taliaferro Washington was born April 5, 1856 and died November 14, 1915. Born into slavery and freed at age 9, he went on to be well educated and is the first leader of the Teskegee Institute in Alabama. He was also awarded an honorary Master of Arts from Harvard in 1896. He was well know as a political leader, educator and author. Great man. Great coins.
The 1947 P D &S are hard to find in my local area 30 plus coin shops, the others years they have, as for circulated many have been used as jewelry over the years . And because I never have or every will buy a coin from E-BAY my search will continue. And yes your statement is correct Ranchhand I should have made my post more clear.
Lots of people purchased commemorative half dollars as keep sakes and good luck pieces which they carried around in their pockets. These coins where often given or handed down from father to son as rememberences. So alot of them have been well circulated in this way. Even in the late fourties and early fifties fifty cent pieces would buy a great deal. All where 90% silver.
sorry for my confusion, 30+ coin shops!!! I only have 2 ;( I understand not wanting to go the ebay route, are you willing to buy from an on-line dealer? If so i you can e-mail or call them, they may have what you are looking for. I may drop in to one of my local shops today to get a coin world, I know they have a tray of circulated commems and i will take a look for you. so just to be clear, you want circulated 1947's? problem free? toning? if they have a full set do you want it? or are you looking for a single example? If i see one that meets your needs i will pick it up, should be around $10 a coin
I found one in a trash dumpster of a store that was going out of business, when I was a kid. I didn't know what it was, so I sold it for 50 cents. Can't remember the date. Later when the collecting bug bit, I bought several for my collection.
There are only 6000 sets of each 1948 and 49 sets ever made for the BTW, and no other coins were issued. of these, about only five or six hundred sets were broken up. Which means that if you get a circulated 1948 or '49 BTW of any mintmark, then you've got among the rarest of the rare. (same with all D-mint BTW of 1950 and '51)
8,000 sets for 1948 Just to close my previous comment, sorry.. no circulated available, I did my best They did have a set of 1946, but they wanted to much for it.
Congress passed the act authorizing the Carver-Washington coins "to oppose the spread of Communism among Negroes".
The Booker T. Washington Memorial, is only a few miles from where I live. I have passed there countless times. The circulated 1947-S BTW Commemorative will be in your mail soon. :smile
