I got this coin fairly cheap, and boy is it toned...Not sure if people consider this ugly or not, but I think its pretty edited!
I like that coin a lot actually. Toners aren't for everyone, but I think I'm starting to appreciate them more and more every day.
I like it. I wouldn't pay much of a premium for it, but it does have some appeal. IMO - It would be worth more if it was older. It's only 17 years old, which makes me wonder how it got to be so toned so quickly. I like coins that look their age. I like nice shiny ASE's and < 20 year old proofs, moderately toned coins that are 20-100 years old, and I like well toned coins that are 100+ years old. But well toned coins that are < 20 years old are somewhat suspect.
If it was in an album stored in humid conditions, it could have toned that way in a few years. I'm just guessing though - that's what I've heard other collectors say. I like the toning - Army green, sort of looks like camo.
It certainly could have. My current pocket piece is a 2009 ASE and it is starting to get the same reddish color along the rim, but it's not as dark and it's only about 1/16" wide so far. I'm suspecting it was sitting on wood for a number of years.
Silver tones quite rapidly in Littleton albums. I have some Kookaburras in one and Canadian Maple Leafs in another and the toning is the same. Sort of a maroon/purple color. Interesting to look at the different years of the coins and see the toning progression as the early years of the series is quite toned and later years are much less with each passing year.
I think your coin is edited too and I have one that has a very similar toning pattern. In my experience, ASE's will tone very rapidly. I have one that is used as the face of a pocket watch that toned very handsomely very quickly.
I'm new to this stuff, almost all my Eagles are regular cept this one...I really hope it isnt artifically altered....but worst case scenerio is that it is and its still 1 oz of silver, so ...oh well
