Double Eagle vs AGE

So I am thinking of buying a raw gold coin for my collection, but I can't decide if I want to get an AU, cleaned double eagle for $1700 or an AGE for around the same.

I'm well aware that the double isn't 1oz, but I'm not so sure if 1700 for it is too much, as it is cleaned and has a few scratches..

What do you think would be the better buy? I'm NOT looking to keep this pristine or to get slabbed, but something that I can put in my pocket and show my family "This is gold looksee!"

And on a totally unrelated note, does anyone have a photo of a double and an AGE side by size?

    Thanks :D

I don't see why you would get a problem Double Eagle when you could get a pristine AGE. If it's because the age and history of the Double eagle than save up another $200 and buy a nice MS common date.

If I were to get a MS one, then chances are it would be in a slab, and I specifically do not want to get one that is in a slab. That is the kicker.

Is 1700 a fair price for a cleaned double?

Is the one you can get for $1700 a St. Gaudens, or a Liberty? I think it's a fair price for a cleaned Liberty, and a bit low for a Saint.

I'd prefer the double eagle as a pocket piece, but wouldn't carry something that expensive around, maybe a large cent , so if lost it is not a huge loss.

It is 1700 for the St Gaudens.
That said, the observe for the Gaudens and AGE are the same, but I just think the reverse of the AGE is.. not so much

i suggest the AGE as it has a very nice design and is worth close to mint, so if its not protected in any case (which personally I would atleast put it in a 2x2) it doesnt hurt the value dramatically but if you dont want that a AGE is the way to go.

I'm with you. I like having something I can handle, and even though I know intellectually that the AGEs aren't really worth much over bullion, it grates on me to take an uncirculated or proof coin and make it circulated.

I got a deal on an MS70 burnished AGE, and it's a beautiful coin in its slab, but I'm starting to think I'd rather have some fiat and a circulated Saint.

Personally I'd go with the double eagle but would save a little more and get a problem free one.

I bet if you look you can get a common date AU problem free double for that price.

Why do that since he wants to carry it raw in his pocket ?

Problem Eagle is worth melt. AGE may have a grade premium.

I sold a few problem free St. Gaudens $20 gold coins in XF/AU at the Long Beach show for $1750 each and they went really fast... figured I sold them too cheap.

....but as a pocket piece any grade premium would be lost.

    A Fair Price!!

A straight answer to your question is: Yes, $1700 currently is a fair price for a cleaned St, Gaudens Double Eagle. Current GreySheet "ask" for the lowest grade (i.e. VF) is $1745 with Gold @ $1660 Spot.

St. Gaudens Double Eagles are seldom seen in VF Grade, as the St. Gaudens coins have generally been uncirculated for 80 years minimum. The average 22 kt. Gold coin would have only been in circulation for 13 years with relatively little handling. The average modern clad coin has been in circulation for 24 years. I can't remember seeing a VF condition St. Gaudens Double Eagle, and the only current ad for VF or better on eBay has a Buy price of $2200. :thumb:

I would buy a double eagle, it's the most beautiful coin ever to many people all over the world. That said, I certainly wouldn't buy one that has been cleaned. Do not get impatient, take your time and get a nice one. With the price of gold being where its at you shouldn't have a problem finding a nice problem free coin. Take your time, you will be glad you did. ;)

Take your time and find a xf example of a double eagle, more history behind it better story piece.
