The coin is much nicer in hand than in the scan...smooth surface, def doesnt look corroded... anyone have any thoughts on what variety this is? I appreciate so much the help from this board. I think it has addicted me to large cents... Thanks!!
I think this is a first. I disagree with Conder and come up with S-196. The second 0 is a little too high to be the S-194 in my opinion. Most of the time I trust him more than myself though.
I'll second the S-196 for the same reason, the second 0 is high which is diagnostic for the 80/79 varieties.
What I keyed on was the shape of the look of the 9. On S-194 and 195 it slopes up sharply in the back and on the 196 I was looking at it doesn't. but I was looking at a late die state when the 9 was starting to crumble. In the earlier states it does rise sharply. So now I compared where the point of the 1 pointed with respect to the notch in the curl. On 194 and 195 it ponts above the nitch, on 196 it points below. On the OP coin it points below. I was wrong, you are right S-196. The 9 fooled me.
Thank you all very much here - is there anything special to it- was it a good pickup for $50 at a pawn shop? Still learning..
Nothing special, it's a common overdate, although it looks like it has decent surfaces. I think 50 is a pretty fair price. If early copper is something you are getting interested in I would really recommend getting a CQR (copper quotes by robinson). They run about $50, but they will pay for themselves very quickly.
