It is most likely a re-engraving of the design (mint employees "touched up" the image on the die for whatever reason), or it is machine doubling. There are very few doubled dies that I know about which involve doubling of the profile. Keep up the hunt!
i thought MD usually shows a shelf like image? i looked at this with my hand held 60x-100x and there is no shelf like image. is the different classes of MD like there are doubled dies?

It is most likely re-engraving then, if you are not seeing the doubling as flat and shelf-like. Quite common for the 1940s. Keep up the hunt!
