I bought another box of pennies from my BoA today, and a couple rolls of halves. I asked the teller where their boxed coins came from and she said that they came from a distribution center in Portland, OR. I read in a few forum posts online that BoA sorts silver out of halves at these distribution centers before they box them, but I have no confirmation of this. Does anybody know if this is actually true? I'm trying to find out before I spring for a box. I mean, I know you can get skunked matter what, but if the halves are, in fact, presorted, then there would be no point to buy a box from them at all. Otherwise, I'll just keep looking for the ones customers have brought in.
Never worked for BofA so I can't say what they do, but none of the banks I worked for over a 20-year period would have devoted the salaried person-hours needed to look at every coin they handle just to find the small minority of silver ones. It just wouldn't be cost-effective.
All carriers sort silver out before delivering to the banks. Garda, Loomis, Dunbar, & Brinks just to name a few. HOTN
I use BofA as my primary bank for boxes of halves. I've had both successful and skunk boxes. You'll just have to dive in and find out.....that's half the fun!
