1857 F.E. clashed with $20 Gold Double Eagle

    DSCN8490.jpg DSCN8492.jpg DSCN8493.jpg Yay! I found one! $25 on eBay. Barely readable but it is what it is. I love these old "mule" clashes. This is the third I've found in a year. All low grade or corroded, but perhaps that means they aren't as rare as originally thought?

    Oh yeah, these are plenty rare enough. You could probably get $150-200 for that one easy in the condition it's in. The seated clashes are way more common, good eye!

    That's the million-dollar question!

    Was it intentional? Or was it some freak accident? No matter how the dies of two entirely different denominations entered one striking chamber together, it sure as heck created one unique die variety.
