hi to you all. maybe someone can help me out.i have a 1299 coin that i think it is jewish. It has the David star on the back.it is brown and i think it is bronze. Can somebody please help me?I need money and somebody wants to buy it from me for 50 bucks. what do you say?please email me at chalapa4you@gmail.com Thank you very much for every sugestion. Have a good day.
It sounds more like an arabic coin than anything else. The arabic date 1299 translates to 1881 AD. At first I thought your coin might be Moroccan but i don't see any coins for 1299 listed in my catalogue for Morocco. That might not mean much though. However i think your chances of getting much more than a couple of dollars for it from a collector are exceedingly slim. An image of the item would help immensely in determining what it is and what its value might be.
Becky, that's a nice coin but it's a standard 5-point star, not a Star of David. He probably has something like this from an earlier post.http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=9810&highlight=star+david I think the conclusion was that it was a Morroccan 3 Falus, mid to late 1800's as Ian has said. BTW...the original ID was by our friend Cucumbor!
Yeah, That's probably what he has...I have three of that same coin....bought them in Spain....I thought they were ancient...lol
*Either* the original poster has read the date wrong *or* he/she has got something entirely different. As i've already mentioned, there is no 1299 listed for that type of coin... in any denomination. Ian
Ian is correct,as usual.I checked Krause and found that the only Moroccan coins dated 1299 with a six pointed star, were struck in silver and there were only one or two of those. Chalapa, any chance of posting a picture of your coin?
thank you Thank you for trying to help me out.I have a scan of the coin but i can not post it.It is bigger than 100k.Please let me know how can i post it or contact me at Make sure private messaging is turned on so members can PM you, instead of listing your email where trolling spammers can see it. if you want me to email it to you. thank you. PS indeed is a 6 corner star, not a 5.
If it's bigger than 100k, you might want to sign up a FREE account on this page: http://www.imageshack.us
It is indeed the hejira date we are talking about. That is, 1299AH = 1881AD. As I recall (probably badly) the first european coin to bear a date was sometime in the 1400's AD, and even then i'm pretty sure that it used roman numerals as opposed to arabic ones. I must dig out my Moroccan coins. I'm sure i've got one with a star on it. Just can't remember the hejira date offhand.
Here is a very short article on the history of dates on coinage...interesting. http://www.medievalcoinage.com/
Nice find with the site there Mik :thumb: I knew about the Denmark coin dated 1234, but the Spanish obol I did not know about.
Thanks Doug, The links at the bottom of the page lead to some nice stuff too (at least one doesn't work though)
A picture would be necessary to identify. If you can't show it to us yet, at least what is the coin's weight and size? There were a couple of Moroccan cast bronze coins with this year.
ok,here it is a scaned photo of it.http://www.geocities.com/chalapa4you/scan0007.jpg Please let me know what you think Thank you.
The coin in the scan looks to me to be a Moroccan silver 10 Dirhams (aka `Rial') minted at the Paris mint in France. It's not in the best of conditions but still worth between $30 -$40 IMHO. There was 870,000 struck in .900 silver and each weighs in at 29.116 gms total weight. It has a baby brother (5 dirhams) and a baby sister (2 1/2 dirhams) but youre one is definitely the 10 dirhams. While the other two types had other minting dates. The 10 dirhams of this type was a one year only strike. Ian
ya what IAN said. the Kauss number is Y#8 if that helps. Mintage is 870,000. And its .900 silver according to what I see.
